Translation for Premium Disc Interview?

Doing an LP, and would love to have a translation for the Premium Disc Interview

Incorporating Scenarios 1, 2, 3 and the Premium Disc, all in one handy board!

Translation for Premium Disc Interview?

Postby GenmaTheSamurai » Sat Dec 22 2018 8:49am

So I am doing a blind LP of Shining Force III and in terms of recording I am almost done with Scenario 3. I have known for a while that there was a video interview with Hiroyuki Takahashi in the premium disc and have yet to really sit down and watch it because 1) I'm not done with the game yet, and 2) I don't understand it. If anyone here speaks Japanese and would be willing to translate and or sub it I would be oh so so so greatful, and will feature it in my LP with credit towards you (if you want compensation even I might offer it, depending on the price, I don't have alot of money I'll be honest.) Thanks so much! :)

I thought there was a transcript of the interview included on the disc as a (Japanese) text file; I vaguely remember the original translation team had a go at translating that file, but I'm afraid I don't know what happened to their work.

Email sent to all the qualified folks I know. Hope we get a bite!

Update:
Great news! mr2dax has done the translation for us! (with a bit of proofing from me)

There is one curious thing that we need to decide. While introducing the four main Sc1 characters, the narrator refers to Grace's race as Foxling (5.22 of the vid). Here is what mr2dax said when I asked about this:

This interview seems to be pre-sc 1 release. Maybe they've changed it later, but I'm 99% sure he says foxling when describing her. The exact term he uses is "ホクスリング型", where 型 means more like a taxonomical form or type. He definitely didn't say kyantol.

So before releasing the translation into the wild, what will likely become accepted as the official version, my question to everyone is if we want to accept exactly what was said, or correct the race to avoid confusion.

I don't think changing it compromises anything. It may have not been established at the time of the interview or it could have just been an oversight. Either way, I would assume the narrator would choose to have it corrected, but this is the kind of thing I prefer to go to the community to decide. Not only for the decision, but so everyone knows the whole story.

Normally I would say to update the script so that it's accurate, but in the case of an interview I believe it should be kept in its original form for the sake of authenticity, even if the information may be a bit confusing for those who aren't in the know. If nothing else, keeping it authentic would serve as a tidbit of history--enjoyable by all--into how the character designs may have potentially changed throughout the course of development; assuming of course that is the reason for the mistake.

I suppose the reasonable thing to do is include both. Something like:

(narrator incorrectly cites Grace's race as Foxling, but it is actually Kyantol)

That possibility crossed my mind as well, but wasn't sure how intrusive of screen real estate such a disclaimer would be. Not that I imagine such being super vital to the viewing experience of an interview, I suppose.

I agree with DomingoRules!. In the game’s translation it’s best to use a little poetic license, since a literal translation oftentimes doesn’t convey the experience that is meant/required. But translating an interview, in my opinion, should be totally authentic, else you are putting words in someone’s mouth so to speak. It is entirely possible that foxling was, in his opinion, what Grace is and the guy who made the guide book disagreed. Or not, we’ll never know.

Therefore, I would keep it 100% authentic or maybe consider putting, “Foxling (Kyantol) to alleviate any confusion.

I think this approach would be fine or put an annotation "*" next to the remark with clarification at the end of the interview i.e. The narrator described Grace's race as Foxling, however the guidebook indicates that..."

Hiroyuki Takahashi (Sonic KK, CEO):
Thinking about it now I was hugely influenced by the industry back then. Before I created these strategy RPGs, the now so-called Force games, Dragon Quest and The Forbidden Series were dominating the scene. It was a time when it felt like people didn't need another RPG. Because of this we sought to make a different type of scenario-based game, which led to us creating Shining Force 1.

1:25
We were told to make Shining Force 3 from the beginning of the Saturn console, but we intentionally wanted to wait until the Saturn reached its peak. That was one thing. Also, we didn't want to publish something incomplete. In a sense, the next generation consoles were said to be the Saturn and the PlayStation. Instead of producing the game together with the consoles we thought it would be best to wait until these consoles had reached their full potential. If we would have produced this game right after the Saturn was released, it may not have looked as good as it turned out in the end.

2:20
Narrator:
Shining Force 2 was released in the fall of 1993. Four years later the long-awaited sequel comes out, this winter. Through a cooperation in design and technology from Sonic and Camelot, the next generation of tactical RPG is born. It is a three-part game that uses the story synchronicity system, so you can experience a new method of storytelling. Shining Force 3, released in three scenarios, will soon be here.

3:13
As with Shining Wisdom and Shining the Holy Ark, Shining Force 3 uses computer graphics technology to create polygons which generate the full video output. Creating 3D maps that enhance the feel of realism and thus changing the concept of RPGs. The beautiful 3D maps invite the player to the magnificent world of Shining Force 3. Also, the generated polygon visuals enhance the realism of the cinematic battle scenes, which is the signature of the series.

Creating yet another visual upgrade, the full polygon battle scenes. With this new initiative, you can enjoy never before seen realism. Well then, let's look at this new generation of battle sequence while introducing some new characters.

4:46
Synbios, the eldest son of Conrad, the hero of the Republic. He is the main character of the first scenario.
Dantares, a warrior serving Conrad, he is a pillar of the Republic and mentor to the main character.
Masqurin, she has been raised as a companion of Synbios since infancy. She is an elven magician.
Grace, as with Masqurin, she was raised as a companion of Synbios. She is a foxling priestess. She is close friends with Masqurin.
(editor note: while the narrator cites Grace's race as foxling, it is actually kyantol)

5:37
As you can see, the player characters and enemies can move freely during the battle sequence. The player can enjoy such battle scenes thanks to the power of fully 3D polygons. We've also paid close attention to the effects. These effects are generated through various programming functions. Furthermore, Shining Force 3 uses a completely new scenario system, synchronicity, which is used throughout the three scenarios. Whatever the main character has done in scenario 1 or 2 will affect the other scenarios.

6:15
Hiroyuki Takahashi:
With this game, we have made big advancements with the engine as well. Both new and old players of this series will realize this when they play it. It's a whole different way of experiencing a story. This is thanks to the data that carries over from one scenario to the next. And there are many things to do in each scenario.
We are doing something that other media can't. I'm not trying to sell you on this game, but I do think this game will bring you a lot of fun.

7:20
Narrator:
In this RPG we've used next generation technology to create fully 3D imagery. It's a game system that evolved from tactical battles to strategy battles. We've utilized a new concept, the synchronicity system, to progress the storylines. We've built in various new systems and visual technologies. A new beginning of strategy RPGs is here and continues to evolve. The visuals are the best, bar none, this will repaint the history of Saturn RPGs.

It's quite remarkable how they were able to manage so many Shining games in such a short amount of time.

A massive thank you to mr2dax and LF for getting this transcript made. I’ve been curious about this for years.

It’s interesting that the japanese fanbase also referred to the Shining tactical games as “force games” and the fact that Sega Of Japan deliberately started calling the newer PS2 games ‘Shining Force’ after Camelot were gone now seems like an even bigger kick in the teeth to fans of the genre.

I've never known such elated excitement sink into enraged distaste faster than when I saw the title Shining Force Neo in Game Informer, only to then read that it wasn't going to be a strategy game.

I remember people here pointing out that the Japanese site referred to it as an Action-RPG, and me and a lot of other people were angrily telling them they were wrong, because it had "Force" in the name, so obviously it would be an SRPG.

LF: Any thoughts of posting the video on YouTube and using the subtitle function to add the translation?

Well Mr. Takahashi, I think it's safe to say: mission accomplished. I know collectively I've easily put more hours into the Shining Force 3 games than anything else by far. The only thing that even comes close for me is the original Langrisser series of games, and I've only been playing those for the past 3 years so...

Lots of gratitude goes to everyone who played a part in making this translation finally happen. Gotta love the community here

(Off-topic: Place your bets now - will Shining Force 4 ever happen? Between the direction Sega's going as of late, the retro revival trend, and the current status of Camelot, I'm going to go out on a limb here and say I think there's a strong possibility. With so much potential left in this IP, I certainly hope they get the opportunity.)

Is it possible to substitute the original video inside the PD for this one, with the subtitles?
