What does Rodi's Kanji against the King and Forte mean?

Postby Pappets » Mon Aug 26 2019 7:24pm

Hi!
Do you remember when we first meet the King of Enrich and Rilix? And both the King and Forte are possessed by evil spirits. Then Rodi tries to exorcise the evil spirits and 5 Japanese Kanji in red colour appear. What does these Kanji mean? Here is a link to a video on youtube of this scene. The moment is at 17:50

It seems that little by little the innovators are coming back to Sega.

This is just a hypothesis, but I think it is a reference to the Nine Syllables. It's some kind of spell used to exorcise demons and ghosts. It originated from superstitous people from China. That is the best explanation I can give you right now.

I asked a friend about the significance of the kanji from that scene; he understands Japanese very well. Maybe he can add something insightful to this discussion.

Concerning just the literal meaning of the characters,
臨兵闘者皆陣烈在前, which is a variation of
臨兵闘者皆陣列在前 (which is itself a variation on
臨兵闘者皆陣列前行)
can be understood as "Warriors, line up before me."

This can be broken a bit further down like this:

臨 preside
兵 warfare
闘 fight
者 person
i.e. those responsible for warfare and that do battle, or warriors/soldiers/fighters

皆 everyone

陣 army
列 line
在 to be
前 in front
enter battle formation and appear before me

It's apparently an incantation for warding off, purifying, or sealing misfortune and evil spirits, depending on the gestures performed while chanting it. I don't understand much beyond that and it originating from Taoism, so here are Wikipedia articles on the concept behind the characters:

Thank you very much for your time in describing the meaning of the Kanjis.
