So you think that Shining Wisdom's Mars should have been, will be if given a new translation, Marth?

Hopefully the producers of any future Shining Wisdom translations will have the sense to know that Mars is the superior name. Especially since Shining Wisdom is an excellent game that deserves nothing but the best.

But then there's Loto/Roto... Localization tends to err.

According to the Phantasy Star Pages, there is no actual "l" in Japanese, so "l" and "r" tend to get confused in translations. Hence, Loto/Roto, but I don't see them ever naming a hero "Mals".

It's not that there's no l, but no r also. Same with b and v, all things concerned.

An English "-th" is usually approximated in Japanese with a "-su", hence "Maasu" --> "Mars" or "Marth." Since an English "r" coming before a consonant group ("rth," "rl" "rs," etc.) generally tends to blend in with the following sounds, in Modern Japanese it is common to elide the actual "r" and elongate the preceding vowel sound. English "L" sounds, on the other hand, do not, and in similar constructions are usually given their own syllable. The deciding factor in this case would be whether the "-su" is voiced to become a "-zu"; if it is written as "Maazu," then the English "Mars" makes more sense than the English "Marth."

Originally, in the English localization of the original video animation (OVA), Marth was referred to as "Mars", but with the release of Super Smash Bros. Melee, Nintendo of America officially localized his name as "Marth". However, in Melee's debug menu, which is written and programmed by the game's Japanese developer, his name is listed as "Mars".[7]

so... this Shining Mars ... is really Mars or Marth? :shifty:
