Deanna or Nick?

Postby edwards64 » Mon Mar 15 2010 9:36pm

My brother and I argued about this and who is better Nick or Deanna and I
was just curious what you all think.

I believe Nick, he's stronger stat wise, stronger character wise, and better character model.

A fair number of people's opinions can be found on this thread on page 2.

Although some of those people may have changed their minds over the last few years.

Looking over my post on that thread over three years ago, I find that my choice and the feelings behind it are still the same.

Nick, I just find it wierd to call a guy "Deanna", especially since I have an aunt with that name.

Voted Nick. Although I prefer Deanna's unique choice of attire, I just can't get past that extremely effeminate name.

Also came off as a bit of an elitist prick with how he kept strictly to himself and Natasha.

I'd call it shy, or perhaps even cautious(remember, Deanna is secretly from the very nation that the Shining Force is at war with), rather than elitist.

Good points Martin; I didn't consider.

I think Deanna is one of the more interesting Shining Force heroes, at least that I've seen, and my only qualm with him is his name...but...

It seems like most of the bashing being done has to do with their appearance. In terms of battle performance, Nick always beats Deanna out in crucial stats, particularly attack. I've had games where he has a 7-8 point lead in that area...

Definitely agree on Nick statwise. Though I prefer Deanna because he looks like a cartoon version of me.
Anyways, why not just rename him Dean? It was obviously a mistake by people who didn't know much about English.

There's even a guy named "Kashing"

The Japanese have some... interesting naming conventions, to say the least. Hell, half the generals' names in SFIII are simply English words (Dominate, Cruel, Arrogant, etc. and so on).

Haha well it sounds pretty fun to just yell out "Dominate!" "Destroy!" under the excuse of calling out someone's name :P

Too bad Scenario 2/3 didn't come out in English.

Deanna is a pretty bad name for a male. As I recall, his japanese name is Shu though; much less sucky despite not being all that appropriate for a clearly western medieval inspired knight guy (speaking of his hero sprite at least).

That's a tough one. Nick was the first hero I ever played in an RPG and his stats are pretty sweet. But Deanna got some serious DEF the first run I managed to do the Museum on Super. I'd have to say Nick overall since the two have similar reasons for their actions.

I have to go with Nick as well. I didn't know the first time I played it if Deanna was a guy or a girl :)

True, and the overall look doesn't help either. That said, given Sega's habit of shamelessly recycling a lot of names or changing them for no reason in SF games, if you consider the original name (Shu) things get a little less bad.

I made some modifications to SF2 for my own consumption using SpaceKnight's editor (renamed characters to their japanese equivalents and also renamed magic spells when applicable to be closer to their SF3 counterparts. I wish I could do the same to the SFCD books, to be honest.

You totally can't tell which one I prefer. I'll keep you all guessing forever, ahahaha!

I actually don't get the issue with Deanna's name. Aside from the fact that I don't get what's wrong with being effeminate in the first place, it makes him cuter anyway. :shifty: If anything, honestly, I'd have preferred that Deanna actually was a girl, just because we don't get female leads in the Shining series. Do we at all, actually? I've only played the Force games.

Female leaders? I don't think it ever happened in SF games. It tends to be a bit of a scant happening in most game series actually. (I recall Ogre Battle having a female leader option, and she's actually quite nice spritewise, but Quest decided to make her non-canon later).
