Since Max and his force managed to break/remove Kane's mask on their own, then why did Ian and his force need a devil (in this case Oddeye) to break/remove Max's mask?

Maybe his was a stronger mask. Kane's failed, so it'd make sense that they'd improve the next one.

That's a fair point. Perhaps Kane's was meant to be broken. Could that be why Darksol sent Kane to Dragonia? Did Darksol intend for Kane to fail and regain his senses? The shrine did state that the doors will only open for 2 heroes (Max and Kane). That might explain why Max's had a "fail-safe" and Kane's didn't.

The masks also have a very different appearance, which suggests different craftsmanship... whether that means quality, individual who created them, nature of enchantment...

Kane also came off as quite a bit more autonomous, a general in his own right even while possessed. It's been a while since I played FC, but I recall Max as being less capable in that regard.
