What can we do to localize Shining Blade

Another Japan-only modern Shining title for the PSP.

What can we do to localize Shining Blade

Postby chevkraken » Tue Nov 20 2012 4:33am

I create this topic for etablishing a Strategy to make come Shining blade in occident.

I have talked of some idea?

1.Fan translation
There is a script of the main story of the game on internet. There is also a team who make a translation patch for Valkyria Chronicles 3 (same gameplay and develloper)

we could contact them, the project could interest them.

2.official Release
Sega financial issues do they can't release the games is occident, especially for PSP who is nearly dead here.

But there is other ways to have Shining blade here. I think to Xseed, Ghostlight (EU) and NIS america.

NIS america have already edited a Sega japanese games (Sakura wars 5) 5 years after his realease. they even made the port from PS2 to Wii, they could do it for Shining Wind or Blade.

I think all of thse editor have forum for games suggestion to edit.

If we are many to contact them, maybe we could see new Shining title in occident.

I love Shining Blade, Fan translation possible ?
Not for the moment, emulators for the moment don't really help hackers because of their debugger who lacks a lot of utility.
Anyway I'd love to do it but it's really hard to do for the moment.

The most obvious, and realistic way I can think of to get a localized version of Shining Blade outside of Japan would be to appeal to Sega to at least port the game for PSN or XboxLive.

Given their current predicament they have put themselves in it could be seen as a good PR move.

Instead of asking other people, the fanbase should up and outright acquire Sega as a company.

That's a shit ton of money, and then you would still need people who understand the business economics aspects. It sounds awesome but it would be very expensive and would take a lot of work.

Edit: If I'm not mistaken, Sammy bought out Sega for 1.5 billion dollars, and that was after having a quarter of their shares. So I'd guess they spent at least close to 2 billion total. Even if shares are cheaper than they were then, we'd still as a fanbase be looking at well over a billion dollars.

Not for the moment, emulators for the moment don't really help hackers because of their debugger who lacks a lot of utility.

There is a fan translation of Valkyria Chronicles 3 who use the same engine than Shining blade. So I don't think it's the problem.

I don't think it's would be a good idea, the Sega public who buy on PSN/Xboxlive is their arcade and retro gamer.

Instead of asking other people, the fanbase should up and outright acquire Sega as a company.

And of course you think you'll be better marketing than Sega....

Stop being fool, the actual commercial strategy is the safe to not lose money. Witout Sammy, Sega will be dead, don't forget, their licence are not big enough (Shining never been a big licence even in the 16 bits era)

So you think it's the same engine it's the same thing everywhere ?
First, the text routine isn't the same at all, the game doesn't have any variable-width font so any translation will

Only thing you can do is a fan translation, and I am not sure if the VC3 team will want to do that... VC had a much wider appeal than the Animu Shining games.

once again, even if they wanted, it's not that easy. It's not because the games are similar that they're 100% the same...

through some simple hex editing i was able to change one of the names displayed above the textboxes into halfwidth ascii english version and have it work after reinserting the files into the game.

couldn't find the files responsible for the scripts themselves (they're probably encrypted, so i can't do anything with them. my guess is, the script is in EV10101.MSB and following ones), so i had to edit it using memory hacking, but the font looks ok to me. no weird spread letters problem either on a real psp or emulator.

if that part was figured out, some sort of fan translation could be done to it.

Interest in the game + knowledge to do it.
As far as I'm concern, there's not so much people who can do it.

Shining Blade Game Suggestions. ... companies bring them here... I think the best we can hope for with this game is a fan translation.

Couldn't Sega bring this out on one of the next generation consoles perhaps as part of a collection?

I mean if there is an actual market for such a game outside Japan then it wouldn't be a bad idea since the art won't age quickly. Is there even a market for this type of game in the U.S. or Europe?

the problem of Shining blade is that most character of Shining Blade have interest only if the player know the story of every Tony Shining Released before.
80% of the characters of the game are returning character from prior games (and some of them talk about event and location from prior games)

So a collection would need to include Shining Tears, Wind and Heart and even maybe the mobile game Wind X (which introduce most of the bad guys, Elmina and maybe explain why Soma and Mao are not returning in Blade) and Wind Festa (who explain why Xecty is on Earth)

Playing to Shining blade without any knowlegde about Tears or Wind would be like play playing Shining force 3 scenario 3 without playing the 2 first scenario (or playing Final conflict without any knowlegde about every Prior Shining game)

Shining Heart is different, it take place after Blade but need to be played first to be fully appreciated.

I don't see Sega making a collection needing to localize 3 or 4 games who made low sales in West
