ETA on American release?

Postby Dreco3000 » Mon Mar 09 2009 12:06pm

anyone? kinda been keeping one eye on this game since it was announced but havent seen a release date for the American version and quite frankly im freaking out i mean honestly this is prolly the only game that could get me to buy a DS. but at any rate after taking a little hiatus from SF games seeing as how sega kept pumping out crapfests im glad to see they may be going back to their roots

It may be a lot of work to translate it, but it's not impossible IMHO. A publisher like Atlus could take it on and understand that fans are happy to have the voices in Japanese and the text in English. I'm not giving up hope of an English release just yet :D

I wouldn't hold my breath on Sega doing it. Far too much voice acting. Yeah, they can just cut it out like they did with Shining Tears, but that will give silly reviewers a reason to dock it points.

Jesus, I just noticed they got some fairly prolific Japanese VA for this game.

ugh don't even mention that terrible game Tears was the biggest disappointment/waste of time/waste of 60 bucks lol needless to say i hated that game. but anyway ill prolly wait a little longer for an american version before i make my final decision.

...Tears wasn't that bad... It was basically Shining Soul 3, but on the PS2. Fairly predictable story with some slowdown in the engine, but nothing game breaking.

I actually really loved Tears, especially the innovative 'control 2 players on 1 pad' dealy-o!

We can hope, maybe make ourselves heard, but I don't think the chances are all that grand. :(

But maybe Sega will take a note from Nintendo and Enix, actually give Western markets what they want instead of what the Japanese think they want.

Yeah, I don't get what it is about voice acting that reviewers think makes it such an essential inclusion in a video game. In about half the video games I've seen with voice acting, the game would have been as good or even better if the voice acting had been cut out.

But... what if they just left the Japanese voices in? Would reviewers harp on even that? (I haven't read enough video game reviews to have even a clue.)

Even if Sega USA doesn't do it, I think there's a strong shot that Atlus will step up to the plate. After all, they localized the last three Shining portables.

They wouldn't do that. If you haven't noticed, with Neo, Exa, and Tears, all traces of the Japanese opening and ending songs were removed.

Ugh. Why can't they keep the songs intact like NISA does with Gust's titles (Ar Tonelico II aside)?

Obviously because NISA and Atlus cater to "weeaboos" or whatever and Sega is all about mainstream.

I honestly think the only thing that should decide if a game is released is whether or not it will sell.

And seeing as how Shining Force Feather barely scrapped ~50K in Japan, I dunno about an American release...

By ~50K, do you mean 50,000 copies sold? Or do you mean it only brought in the equivalent of $50,000 in Japan? Sorry for these silly questions.

Well it'd sold about 42,000 copies last I checked (about 31,000 in the first week of release).

Wouldn't say that precludes it from any chance of an English release, though.

I emailed my old contact at Atlus to enquire as to whether they might take on the project and I received a fairly standard reply. Can't comment on it due to their non-disclosure policy but I'm sure any of you who email them will receive the same.

I wonder if they keep track of how many of those are bound for overseas?

Well, then translate those songs like Grandia III did.
Or, substitute with an equivalent good song like DDS1.

The forbidden series is far more mainstream, but they kept their vocals as well.

Good going, Sega.

Good going, Sega.

The Forbidden Series is about as mainstream as RPGs get, but a lot of those songs are translated from their Japanese versions such as "Melodies of Life", "1000 Words", FFX-2's opening, or were already in English, such as was the case with "Kiss Me Goodbye".

So... Sega is just pretty stupid for not going the translation route, but it's all about saving a buck for them, I am sure. Thus why they chop out 98% of the voice acting from Shining Tears or get no-names for the other Shining titles.
