Ruin Map Names

At some point we decided to name all the ruin maps simply "Ruin Map" and let the descriptions identify them. While this allows us to state it is a ruin map, it doesn't allow the specific ruin to be identified in the item name. After using this for a while it has become evident a different strategy is in order.

A big part of why it is how it is currently is because we are limited to 14 characters for item names. This allows very little room to identify the ruin if "ruin map" is to be a part of it. However, it would appear to be much more important to be able to identify which map it is by name. I'll also take this opportunity to enhance the descriptions as needed.

I propose we identify each map with one word plus either "ruin" or "map". No room for both. I have researched the locations of all ruins in the three scenarios and have come up with workable names based on either the city they are located in (or near to) or the traditional names in the game. I'm leaning pretty heavily away from simply numbering them (Ruin Map 1, Ruin Map 2, etc).

I would like to get feedback on the names themselves as well as if "ruin" or "map" should be used. One note is that "Dwarf Hill Map" would fit, but "Dwarf Hill Ruins" would not. "Valley Ruins" may be another option for this one. Another note, Plateau Ruins could become Barrand Ruins if the Barrand Ruins of Sc2 became Beach Ruins.

Since the map icon looks just like a rolled up treasure map I would leave it as Ruins instead of Map since it helps describes what type of map it is.

As for the proposed name, I think they all sound fine. I don't have any alternate suggestions.

I've struggled with this quite a bit. With my font, only 14 characters (for weapon and item names) fit on the status screen. I was trying to avoid abbreviating item names, but I ended up using the Scenario 1 format for the Ruin Maps (Hill Rn Map, etc).

I'm working through the ruin map descriptions and I'm curious how valuable small words are to you guys.
For example:

Railhead Ruins
Ruin Map - north of Railhead
or
Ruin Map - Railhead North Plain

Aspia Ruins
Ruin Map - in the catacombs below Aspia
or
Ruin Map - Aspia Catacombs

Desert Ruins
Ruin Map - in the desert south of Aspia
or
Ruin Map - Aspia South Desert

The second option will basically be going with the (save) location name.

I will be posting the re-worked descriptions in the first post once we decide this.

I like option two better (using save location name) plus an added bonus would be saved space in most cases.

I've updated the original post with the descriptions as I have them now.

Please note the Sc3 (save) locations have not received a proper review, so the Sc3 descriptions will likely change once that happens. It won't be for V18. Please forgive their clunkiness in the mean time.

Also Hill Ruins changed to Dwarf Ruins. A little more character I believe.

Please continue to make suggestions if you have them.

After seeing these in game, it becomes apparent "Map" is a better way to go than "Ruins".

In particular, when one of these is involved in a message, such as when you find/receive it, it's not quite right to find/receive a ruin as opposed to a map.

I've edited the first post with the new descriptions, so please give any feedback you have.

I still have a couple of things I want to finish up before releasing V18 proper, so it has been delayed a couple of weeks. Not because of this map issue, but due to the delay, I will make this change for V18.

I think having the map names as "Barrand Map" may cause a bit of confusion - I personally would think that this would be a map of the whole of Barrand, and not just of the local ruins.

Maybe having a shortened form of the name + Ruins Map ("Bar. Ruins Map") would work?

Yes, I agree. There doesn't seem to be a perfect option. Some compromise will be needed.

However, it seems if we went with more of a feature name as opposed to the city, it would clear most of these up. The city location can remain in the description.
