Shining Force III makes top 100 games of all time!

News from: http://www.shiningforcecentral.com <br /><HR SIZE="1">Shining News: Shining Force III makes top 100 games of all time!<HR SIZE="1"><br />SFCer Ashley, who works at gamesTM magazine here in the UK has dropped me a line to say that Shining Force III has made the top 100 games of all time in the 100th issue of gamesTM.<br />
<br />
<a HREF="http://www.gamestm.co.uk/discuss/100-greatest-games-of-all-time-100-covers-revealed/">To celebrate 100 issues, the magazine has put together 100 different covers</A>, each featuring one of the top games. Naturally, SFIII is among them, as you can see from the cover here. <br />
<br />
Only 400 of each cover design will be available, so they're very limited edition. It'll be down to chance whether or not your usual stockist happens to have a SFIII cover or not.<br />
<br />
So, when the magazine goes on sale on September 2nd, the great SFIII cover hunt will begin! I for one will check all the local shops for it and will pick up any spare copies I find with the SFIII cover. Ashley, despite working for the magazine, does not automatically get his choice of covers and would dearly like a copy not only for himself but also one to send on to Camelot in recognition of their achievements.<br />
<br />
Should I locate more than one copy, I will gladly give the second to Ashley for Camelot - any others will be available to SFCers (at cost price) and I hope all SFCers will do likewise to help each other out. I'll take Thursday off work and spend the day visiting all the local magazine stockists if I can!<br />
<br />
Good luck all :)

Thanks a lot for the post, Moogs. And thanks for offering to help with the treasure hunt. :)

I'll be on the lookout too, of course. And if I see any SFIII covers I'll buy as many as I can carry and put them up for sale here. It's only right that they go to the fans.

You can add me as one of those who're interested in this! Excellent reward for the best game I´ve played in all my years. There's still a game which has yet to surpass Shining Force III in my book!

A thumbs up to GamesTM and Ashley!

If this magazine isn't available in the U.S., I will be keeping a close eye on the classified adverts board for a chance to buy a copy. I never had a chance to play this game and will emulate this beautiful game to see what I have been missing! If it is available in the U.S. I will keep an eye out for it and will purchase as many as I can get my hands on and will pass on the extra copies to members who couldn't find it. I will sell them at newsstand price or best offer. I may also just give a few away to members who can't afford to buy one. Thank you Moogs for the heads up!

That's awesome that this made the top 100 of their gaming list, considering how many games the world has. Very cool.

...Makes me want to play SF3 even more... :(

-.-

I'd also like to own that cover, but yeah... I live in the US, so that probably won't happen. =\

Before the great hunt begins, here's a couple of pointers:

To my knowledge, Morrison's & Sainsbury's don't carry gamesTM. I know this from personal experience, having worked the news/mags/home entertainment sections at 6 different Morrison's and one Sainsburys! Also, from what I can gather, Gamestation has stopped selling magazines, but I know the one I used to be assistant manager at was still having them delivered when I was in it, so it may be worth asking!

Tescos do stock it, however, so keep your peepers peeled in there!

Also, don't forget, the store's entire stock may not be out on display! Again, ask! In my experience, if you catch the person who's doing that section (providing it isn't first thing and they're desperately trying to get the new stock out on the stands!), they'll be more than happy to have an excuse to hide away from the shop floor for a couple of minutes and go have a look for alternate covers for you! :)

Not entirely true - my local Sainsbury's at Bagshot Road, Bracknell does stock Games TM, but I gather it's one of their larger stores so may well have a larger range than most other banches.

Cool, that's good news! :) I've only had experience with the four here on the Island and the one in Pompey, and although my store and Pompey both have a pretty big news & mags section, it's obviously not big enough!

I will be checking every shop in my town for a copy on the 2nd. Thankfully a WHSmiths has just opened up which increases the potential. There's also a Morrisons and Sainsbury so will report back if they stock GamesTM at all.

Wonder how many copies we'll get between us? :)

GOOD NEWS: You can order specific covers directly from here

BAD NEWS - There are only two of each cover available. Act quickly!

Have dropped them a line, awaiting a response.

Didn't find any in town today :( WHSmiths didn't have any in stock yet, but may get them tomorrow and will call me if they get a #50!

Will have to see if I can contact some of the out of town supermarkets to see if they have any in stock!

EDIT:
...
Asda don't have it - no GamesTM at all.
Morrisons don't have #50, but may get more stock in a week or two when it sells out.
Can't find a number for Tesco, but will get Rich to pop out there by car tomorrow!

Not looking hopeful for Weymouth :(
Got my sister on Suffolk duty ;)

I'm on Manch duty!
Popped into Smiths yesterday - they had about half a dozen of the wrong covers. I'm going to Sainsburys later today, and will check some of the smaller newsagents in the city centre on Monday when I'm back at work.

Moogie - I didn't realise you lived down by Weymouth, a very large portion of my family live there.

And Koshums, I was in Sainsbury's yesterday but I didn't know about this awesome moment in history until 2 minutes ago, so I can't say for sure if they have it in or not.

If it's any help, I wasn't divinely drawn towards the mags stands.

Sadly the Morrisons in Basingstoke and the Co-op in Overton didn't have the SHF3 issue in stock. :( (Amusingly the Overton Co-op had a copy of issue 78! :) )

Gonna be checking the Bracknell Sainsbury's tomorrow, then probably stopping at all the service stations between here and Liverpool tomorrow.

Tesco & Londis didn't have it either :(
I knew I should have phoned this morning to order a copy from that link, but I assumed someone else had already bought them by the time I woke up (had an accidental lie in this morning).

Guess I'll be phoning around Dorchester tomorrow.

Been to 3 Tesco's, 2 Asda's, 2 Morrisons, 2 Sainsbury's, and 6 newsagents, and not a single one of them has had a single copy of GamesTM, never mind one with the SF3 cover on it.

I guess it's not that popular a magazine where I live =/

(I don't get it either >.>)

Wow I´m disappointed! :( I was hoping that, at least, someone form the UK would have got more than 1 mag with the SF3 cover right now.

I´ve tried that link from Ashely, got no answer even though I sent the message on the same day (it was still on stock, or at least the image didn´t have "sold out").

The chances of someone, that's not from UK or have acess to that magazine, are getting slimmer by the day :(

Say hooray for the M40 Oxford services. :)

And sadly no, I didn't find any others. :( Wound up stopping at most of the service stations on the way to and from Liverpool, and although they all had GamesTM in stock none of the others had the SHF3 one.

However, I've told anyone who I'd already asked to look out for the magazine that I know others are also interested, so if they happen to spot copies I'm still interested in those, so don't think I've stopped the hunt just because I've got my copy! ;)

The chap at Midlife Gamer has very kindly agreed to let me have his copy, so if you don't secure the second copy for Camelot, let me know and I'll still happily donate mine.

Am still on the hunt for further copies for other peeps here. Got a friend looking on Portland for me today, there's a couple of co-ops there and a local shop. Fingers crossed!

I'm still hunting for extra copies for other peeps here, and am going to another local town tomorrow to have a look around for it! Don't know how I'll be able to decide who gets any others - will have to do some kind of random draw/lotto for it!

I'd like to start running contests again, once the site is rebuilt. We'll see how that goes - best laid plans, and all that!

On my lap sits issue 100 of gamesTM, cover number 50.

The lovely man at Midlife Gamer (midlifegamer.co.uk) has sent me his copy, which apparently was otherwise going in the recycle bin.

I dread to think how many might end up that way.

Unfortunately no time to peruse it right now as I've just taken delivery of some lures for the bass comp I'm in tomorrow, and they've sent the wrong bloody ones. So, off to the tackle shop for an emergency last minute lure hunt. Crap!

It's rather dumb considering that the collage is boring... they didn't blend it together at all or anything. Plus, most people only played Scenario 1. The high-res cover would have been killer (and I don't even like the game!)

I can't release the high-res art since it was given to us under trust and only after Sega put in some serious work to convince Camelot to share it. Really sorry about that.

What I can do is put up a wallpaper that I made during production. It's a mock-up of a cover that I wanted us to run, basically using the cut-outs to create a crowded "group shot" of the characters. It's a bit rough around the edges and I was hoping our design team could use it as inspiration while making a proper image for the cover but they just didn't have time. The mock-up survives as my desktop wallpaper and I'll make a point of uploading it here in the morning if only so you can see what might have been.

Aside from that, let's just look on the bright side eh? This is still the only time Shining Force has been on a UK magazine cover and will surely help raise awareness about the series - especially with Sega themselves. I'm hoping they get the message that a) We want to see more Shining games released in the UK and b) we want more Camelot/Shining Force III stuff in particular. Believe me, Sega has taken more notice of our 100 covers than any other publisher in the world. :)

Fair enough - having worked with supplier artwork and the regulations many of them put on its usage I suspected that would be the case, but had to ask in the small hope that you could. ;)

Funnily enough, back around the turn of the century when I started getting into SHF3 and SFC I put together something that's probably along the lines of what you've done/had in mind: http://kyantol.com/personal/img/shf3-cast.jpg :) If memory serves I made it from GIF cutouts I pulled from a website (sadly I forget whose).

And if Sega are taking as much note as you're suggesting, here's hoping it affects them in the right way - enough of this "new" stuff they're shipping out, the people want classic Shining Force games! :D

That mock up looks much nicer, I've been looking out for the SF3 one in Devon with no joy so far. I haven't been looking that intently though as imo it doesn't look that amazing, I went with Silent Hill 2 instead as I love all the art design for that. If I see a SF3 one I'll grab it though.

Fair enough again... you know what I'm like when it comes to Grace. ;)

That said, for a front page cover or portrait view it probably would have been difficult to get in many more characters than that in that sort of arrangement, at least not without it seeming too crowded or the characters being fairly small (and thus more white space).

Someone tried doing such a pic of everyone way back, and nice an idea as it was (it inspired me to do my Sc1 Force pic) it does come out as a pretty crowded and clustered affair that probably wouldn't have been too attractive as a cover (especially with all the white dots from the GIF transparencies around the edge - your Photoshop guys would need to spend ages cleaning these up on every character, which may be why they went with the solo pics instead): http://kyantol.com/personal/img/shf3shr ... rybody.jpg

Cull that was a beautiful pic. Your first and Ashleys were good too. But since I've only ever played Scenario one I like that one best. In fact I changed the wallpaper on my phone to that pic. :)

Indeed. We basically had 279 pages to design in the same time that we would normally do 180. There was nowhere near enough time to spend on each cover and there have been a couple of mistakes as a result.

Still, I remain fairly positive about the whole thing. I argued for quite a few of my personal favourite games to get covers and many were rejected. I still consider it a miracle that ShFIII got through considering that nobody else on the team has even played it.

Well out of all of your favorites that could have gotten in I'm glad it was this one. :)
Here's to hoping it will kick Sega and Camelot in the butt and tell them that at the very least they need to release these games in English. Also that we want a return to the origins of the series.

You got another pair of eyes in Glouc at the request of da GoatS.

I have spread the word and have some cross team competition - some guys I know are mental about Doom, Super Metroid and/or MegaBomberman as well as others, so I've got them looking and there will be the potential of swapsies instead of cashingtons !

If I didn't trust the regulars, I'd wonder if this wasn't some niche marketing scheme - "Buy GamesTM, buy more, buy them all!" - no commission, honestly ? j/k

I'm surprised that not many as satisfied with the SF3 cover picture? I think it's really great, and that for me, it really suits a 100th issue cover (that contains a greatest games countdown) for some reason?

I think that Ashley's mock-up pic is great too (keeping that one permanetly saved, thanks Ashley). Though the only problem I have with it is that it's a tad too complex/crowded. Hence why the simpler cover used works so good.

It's really hard for me to put it into words why I like that cover used so much? It's just that from the first moment I seen it, I immediately feel in love with it. I guess love at first sight says it all?

Oh, Culley's pic a getting saved too. >_>

First: I've written about it enough in gTM that a few people are aware of its innovative features by proxy.

Second: I think they know that I would have quit if it didn't go through. ;)

Oh, I was only talking about the cover that made the 100th Games TM (the one everybody is complaining about)... and I didn't know you liked SF3, wildrosebc? (Don't think I've noticed you talk about it yet?)

Also, if you picked up favourites from that wall of characters one, does that mean you played past Scenario 1 too? Or where just stuck picking favourites from Sc.1?

Awesome tactic. I like to use it alot myslef... though most times I just want to quit and 'am just messing with them.

Either way, glad it worked, especially if it does get us a Camelot or Camelot style SF game again. And the day you do lose you job there without an explaination why from you, we'll now know why.

I love it. But I don't talk about it much because my Saturn memory card quit on me, leaving me stranded and unable to play any of my Saturn games.

Mostly I picked out the characters that either fought or appeared in scenario one like Medion. Should get around to getting the translated ones from the site to go further but npt until beta testings over for the new SF2 game.

Oh, I'm actually in a simular boat, as my Sega Saturn has been MIA for awhile now along with my Sega Saturn Racing Wheel (racing games just don't feel the same without it).

I still got the 3D Nights Pad along with it's games though. And I am planning on buying my missing Saturn & Wheel soon. That's why I just recently payed for the SF3 trilogy + PD (yeah, I'm a bad boy, as I've been putting my money into a better+dual core computer to handle Sega Saturn (SSF) emulation, instead of my missing Saturn).

Anyways, i'm looking forward to receiving this issue, even though it won't have the SF3 cover (getting "Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion" cover. My brother has been eyeing & talking about this game series, so it works out). As I love greatest videogame countdowns & it'll give me a chance to view what modern overseas magazines are like?

Overseas? Where do you live? Thought for some reason you were in the UK.

I don't like playing games in another language. A good rpg is like a good book. If I0 can't read it or if I have to keep looking down at a script its not fun.

Good score on finding the whole deal for SF3. Did some recent checking and they're not cheap.

I was born in Romania, though I'm only 1/4 Romanian.

Came to Canada in 1989 (dad fled the country succesfully, on his second attempt & after some rough jail time, when it was still communist). I don't like it here (you get taxed so much here + Canadians don't stick up for themselfs) that much and am planning on moving to the Sates very soon + set myself up to be able to travel as much as possible for the rest of my life. As I do enjoy traveling & observing different cultures. (Plus I plan on spending some time in Germany with some relatives to learn the German language again... going to Japan & learning that language + culture would be very cool too)

When I stared SF3 Scenario 1, I started on the basis that Scenario 2 was like 99% done, and that I wouldn't have to wait much longer too finally play Scenario 3 translated (the idea of being cliffhanged after Scenario 1 didn't seem so bad if I could play at least Scenario 2 roughly translated + Sceanrio 3 translation in near sight). However, after I finished Scenario 2 for the second/third time & Sceanrio 1 for the third/fourth time, to setup the ultimate save file to transfer over, I absolutely could not contain myslelf and played through what was translated of Scenario 3 (like only chapter 1)... but then guess what? After that I couldn't contain myself even more and had to play the rest of Scenario 3 with SFC's script!

This game had me hooked very bad, and the fact that the experience lasted so very long before I finally completed Scenario 3, made it seem like the fun was gonna last forever. I treasured every moment of it and couldn't believe that Camelot made my favourite game 3x (all 3 Scenarios) & yet they still went out and made the PD. This is why I'm so surprised that some Shining fans aren't pleased with what Camelot did with SF3, as it seems like it's the ultimate thing they could to to a Shining Force fan by leaps & bounds.

That year (2009) it seemed like I played nothing but only SF3 from the moment I got up to the momment I went to sleep. Best gaming experience of my life without a doubt + strongly rejuvenated my interest in videogames... though it's kind of a double edged sword kind of thing since I still mostly rather play only Shining related games. (Puts too much pressure on other games to be good )

Wow. Got to say when I bought my Saturn it was specifically to play SF3. Of course I found loads of other games for it. But my first Saturn game was SF3.

In many ways I think its one of the best Shining games. Loved the friendship system and the characters and everything else about it.

Good luck with your moving to the US. Got any idea where in the US you're gonna go?

WARNING May contain RANT- including some stuff I may of talked about before? + off topic?

Yeah, yeally? I alwyas thought it was weird for Sega or Nintendo fans of the 16-bit generation to go with the Playstation choice (though I had all three of the major 32-bit era systems as soon as possible >_>. Plus luck enough to have had both SNES & Genesis too). I mean, When PSX came out, I didn't see one game I wanted or liked (including Wipeout, which I briefly tried at at a Rental store where it was setup... still trying to like it/get into it), not until Twisted Metal 2 came out that finally made me want to try a PSX game.

I choose Sega Saturn ASAP because they had a rich heritage of great franchices, which included some of the best arcade games ever (and the most technically advanced too). Plus all Sega games had this special magic + games on Sega systems that could not be denied by a true gamer (well, just not a typical jo-blow casual gamer that's contributing to this videogame downfall that started with this nitche market becoming too mainstream due to the popularity of the PSX, is what I mean). Anyways, I started my Saturn gaming with Daytona USA & never regretted buying this system ever, even though it failed. As I still really love this system the best for some reason?

I know I'm always sounding negative towards S*ny & their PS, but I just hate what they did to the videogame market (what I explained in the last paragraph) + I miss Sega of old.

And in a way, if you are a Shining Force fan (one that's in pain due to no new & true Camelot SF game or at least a Camelot SF spin off in the series), it would seem that you must hate S*ny in some way or another too, no? I mean, if it wasn't for S*ny domination of the market with it's army of casual gamers, Sega Saturn would of still been around, and so would of Sega, Camelot & the true Shining Force as made by Camelot! Or at least one more game in the franchise made my Camelot...

I mean, maybe that's why SFC has S*ny beeped out?

Good grief. I beg of you... Never, ever use the phrase "true fan" again. I get such a massive twitch whenever I see that phrase. In fact, please lay off the use of "true" in relation to gaming and fandom entirely. It serves no purpose other than to be unabashedly snobby and elitist.

Indeed. Besides that, S*ny isn't the only one to shovel out shit for a system. Every single publisher is guilty of that crime, so it's a rather fanboyish comment to make. And when I say fanboy, it's never a positive term.

Hmmm, never gave it that much thought. But yeah, sure, I see your point.

I'm taking it out as to avoid this whole "unabashedly snobby and elitist" thing. It sounds so terrible when you put it that way.

In regards to S*ny not being the only one shoveling out crap. I guess it's better to say that S*ny is a company that does not take any risks when making/pulishing games (or approving certain games to be made for their system), unlike Sega.

When these came out, my friend managed to find me a NiGHTs one, I was squeeing over it for a long time, then I saw that ShF3 was in here and squeed more.

I spotted a missing Spiriel, at least two Ninjas and at least two Birdmen, as well as the Produn somebody pointed out to me. The way that everyone was the same size looked a bit silly as well, it made Horst look huge.

The new issue goes on sale this Thursday so there's only about four more days to track down a cover if you still want one. As far as I understand it, all unsold stock will then return to Imagine to be sold on the e-shop, so there may be a second chance in the coming weeks. Keep an eye on this just in case.

Just have to tell you my story :)

I live in Finland and last Friday (a week ago) I went to a restaurant with my girlfriend, before we went there she wanted to go to the "academic bookstore" because they had one kind of a "super sale". I said, ok, I can always pick up the new number of Games TM, so we went there, and I headed for the magazines to pick upp issue 101, I couldnt belive my eyes when I saw it, they had not got the new issue yet and there it was, issue 100 with the Shining Force III cover!

I was so happy finding it, to be honest thats the only place I know in Finland that gets Games TM. And now I got the magazine to my (little) collection

It must be great to find that out after all this time and now know you've got so many 'new' Shining games to play :) Hope you enjoy playing them if you can get hold of them.

Meanwhile, if you're a big fan of the originals, would you be able to lend your support to the SF:SOS campaign? http://sos.shiningforcecentral.com - we're celebrating the series' 20 anniversary with a bundle of fanmail to Camelot (the original developers), as well as videos telling them how much we love the series. The ulterior motive being to try to get them back on board as the developers! There's even a prize draw for everyone who sends a letter/video - some of the prizes are Shining games. Full info on the site.

Oh, and welcome to SFC by the way ;)
