Let's Play Shining Force Neo!

Chrono Trigger will come, but this game is on loan and therefore has priority.

>Opening narration... man I hope that's not the voice of...
>...Max. It is.
>Is that the Innovator symbol on his back armor? What the heck?
>Please, put a real shirt on, Max. Midriffs aren't for manly warriors.
>Max is being trained by a centaur veteran in a castle. This seems somewhat familiar...
>SHIRT! PUT ON!
>Monster attack already and we're only 4 minutes in. Guess they're hoping action will distract us.
>I DON'T CARE THAT YOU'RE IN COMBAT, PUT A REAL SHIRT ON, MAX!!!
>Ugh.
>Yeah, yeah use magic on the foes ahead... Immune to physical attacks. Got it.
>Where's the spell button?
>No, not healing water, where is the spell command!
>AAAAAH NOT TAUNT, BLAZE! BLAZE!
>Phew.
>yeah, yeah, monstergate. Got it.
>That was really easy.
>Hey, first cut away RP scene... Aah! Max's eyebrows look like someone strapped daggers to his face!
>Yeah, yeah, great job everyone. Though I wonder why Max just didn't detach his eyebrows and use them to fight. They look like they could be formidable weapons.
>"Max is blessed by his fellow soldiers"
>Aw it was nothing, really..
>Graham: Hey, don't you like that one girl?
>"Max is taunted by his fellow soldiers."
>Well that was fast you damn turncoats.
>"A round of drinks for everyone!"
>...Honey Lattes? wat.
>CUE VIDEO MONTAGE!
>MONTAGE!
>SHOWIN' SPOILER SCENES AT THE BEGINNING OF THE GAME!
>MONTAGE!
>TRYIN' TO GET YOU EXCITED WITH PICTURES OF BIG EXPLOSIONS!
>MONTAGE!
>WAIT A MINUTE I THINK WE JUST USED THE SAME SCENE TWI-
>MAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAX!
>oh god what
>That's Meryl. The designated love interest/spellcaster.
>This does not bode well.
>Guess I gotta deliver this letter.
>Another cutscene.
>Uuuugh. Voices so bad. Thank God I can skip ahead.
>"X" button, you're my only friend here.
>"I haven't seen your brother Cain."
>Really? I saw him in the opening intro, with a dark mask and sword.
>Max and Cain. This is so PREDICKTABULL.
>One guard sounds like an 11 year old girl.
>OK... OK...
>If I make every joke I can, this will take all night. Stopping here for now, but I'll keep playing.
>Very tempted to bail on this Let's Play already.

>"I cannot allow you to be a Force, Max. You have one fatal flaw."
>Just one? Really? Wow, Gaia's feeling generous. I wonder which one he picked. The eyebrows? The voice? The terrible fashion sense?
>"Impossible! The Legion will never return!"
>Don't say that, then the-
>"Gaia! The Legion has returned!"
>Le sigh.
>Fight fight fight.
>"HOT STUFF COMING YOUR WAY!"
>"NO WAY!"
>"YEAH! YEAH!"
>Thank God the sounds of battle mostly drown the voices out.
>Hey look it's Not-Cain!
>"Cain, is that you?!"
>Huh, guess they didn't feel like insulting our intelligence this time.
>KINDA-SORTA-SWORD OF DARKNESS SHOW ME YOUR POWER!
>He's still alive?
>Oh, and GAIA HADOKEN!
>OK, NOW Max's dad is dead.
>Cecil, I mean Kain, I mean Cain, destroys the Crystal of Wind. I mean Crystal of Thunder.
>One night of crying and everyone is joking in the morning.
>Denial ain't just a river, baby.
>A three hour tour turns into a six hour grindfest because I repeatedly got lost on the way to the next objective.
>On the bright side now I'm fairly powered up.
>Monsters attacking the fort again.
>Why are half the soldiers just standing around?!
>Don't talk to me! Fight!
>There's an orc RIGHT THERE!
>What are you people paid for?!
>Despite being his vast superior in experience, rank, and power, Graham is put under Max's command with no explanation given other than "The Chairperson said to."
>"TREMBLE BEFORE MY MIGHTY BALLS!"
>...Did he just say...
> "TREMBLE BEFORE MY MIGHTY BULGE!"
>That's not much better...
> "TREMBLE BEFORE MY MIGHTY VOULGE!"
>OK that's PROBABLY what he meant, but damn! That is not a good line to slur your words on!
>COMMENCE OPERATION GRINDFEST!

INFORMATIONAL MESSAGE: The gameplay is exactly the same as EXA's but you don't have a base you can mess with, and you can't customize your companions. It's still pretty fun, this might've been a good game if they would've bothered with things like plot, character design, and non-children's theater voice acting.

Hey at least you thought past "bulge", to this day that is what I think he's saying. And your right about the voice actors, in about ten more hours you'll want to kill yourself to escape the voices.

>Bigg Fite
>OK, if you're tagging along what's your name?
>Chiquita?
>I guess I'd have to be BANANAS to let you come along!
>HAHAHAHAHA.... huh....

>Banana girl ran off to an undead castle and we have to save her?
>Ay yi yi. No es bueno.
>WHAT SICK FIEND PUT IN A CAST IRON FENCE MAZE IN FRONT OF THE FRONT DOOR?!
>DIRECTION SENSE! MY ONE WEAKNESS!

>"But she's a little girl!"
>"The master cares not!"
>uh...
>"It will be such magnificent love!"
>uhhh...
>"They'll become one with the master!"

>Whatever. Down he goes!
>Oh hi, MYSTERIOUS MASKED MAN
>"Who are you?!"
>It's Cain.
> "TELL ME WHO YOU ARE!"
>Are you RETARDED? IT'S CAIN!
>"Why don't you guess?"
>YOU ALREADY WERE REVEALED AS BEING CAIN, DID EVERYONE JUST FORGET?!

Keep up the good work man!

Also, I always thought he said "tremble before my mighty hull!"
I think the voice acting gets better as you go though. Meryl learns new spells so she has more things to say instead of blurting out "HOWT STRUVF CUMING YO WAIY!" over and over again.

Oh, and if this is your first playthrough I highly recommend puting some blue stuff (did it even have a name?) in fire magic. There's a boss down the road that regenerates HP faster than a monster gate that's pretty much impossible without it.

Force energy... and I'm going pure physical attacks. : / I'll keep an eye out for fire weapons then I guess.

I GRIND GRIND GRIND GRIND the castle for about 3 hours while I do aerobics. I am in pain. I am not sure from the exercise or game.

Anyway.

>Make it to Quincine.
>MYSTERIOUS WOLFMA- Oh f*** it, we all know it's Baron.
>Hey, Baron's voice actor doesn't completely suck!
>OH NO THE SANCTUARY IS UNDER ATTACK!
>"It's that Masked Man again!"
>"Who could he be?!"
>"I am your brother, Max."
>WELL BOY I SURE DIDN'T SEE THIS COMING!
>We have to search for Rhinos!
>He's a really big Force that likes to drink, so it shouldn't be too hard.
>"Hey, half giant wino, get out of the way!"
>...that is clearly Rhinos, Meryl.
>Well, maybe Max will...
>"Hey have you seen another half giant around?"
>Goddammit, Max.
>"THAT WINO WAS RHINOS ALL ALONG?!"
>You guys... how... no... nevermind. I don't want to know.

From what I've read, I think this may be more accurate.

Nice work on the Let's Play, kudos for enduring this game so others don't have to. ;)

Unfortunately, I already beat the game while waiting for someone to bump this, so...

Long story short, it's a re-imagining of Shining Force 1 that is SO PREDICKTABULL and cheesy in plot. Gameplay wise, I have no problems. It was fun, even if a little mindless at times. This might've been a really good game if they'd bothered with the plot, characters, and character design.

Not to mention dem dubz.

Aside from the cheesy dialogue, and Chiquitita I didn't mind it so much. The gameplay I actually enjoyed, it's definitely a one up on Golden Axe and I've played those since the NES. I thought a lot of the roaming graphics were pretty cool. The Force Frame, and the great number of weapons was also a plus for me. Even in the same category of weapon I found it was often a bit of a toss up which one I preferred using or which weapons pros beat out the cons.

Did you take on the secret dungeon. THAT is a dungeon grind!

Yeah I'm on level 43. Dunno if I'm going to complete it though, it's pretty grindy even for me.

Yeah it's fairly tedious when you are nearing 200, and everything that is twice your size gets a one hit kill on Max. Honestly I was using a bow after I reached some of the later craziness. Running into it was like asking for a crit hit to the face.

I ended up beating it after all. I thought it was 100 levels, not 50. Yeah, the damage outputs are insane. I ended up burning through my Charms of Light to take down things like the end of dungeon Arc Dragons. And I had to use Adam as a tank to soak damage from some of the previous demons.

What a crappy reward. "Hey you're Supreme Kings now. Seeya." At the very least, put a title on my name or something, have the status screen pop up with Lord Max or the like.

And I maxed out every Force Art and nothing. I was expecting something neat to happen.

No you are just a very versatile asswhooper.

Honestly with a little more effort the game could have really kicked ass. I still think the battle system was cool especially for a hack n slash given the versatility of your character, and all of the selectable weapons.

I'm fairly sure the final dungeon varies in levels or something because I've had friends give me different estimations of how many levels they had to go through.

It's 50. The training area in EXA goes to 50 as well, and they're more or less the same thing...
