Epic Orchestral/Metal Remix of SF Sountrack!

Postby genmills » Mon Jul 29 2013 3:57am

I've had this idea for a long time now, and I recently spent a few weeks of work creating this epic medley of the Shining Force music! I figured I should post it here where people will actually appreciate great music! :) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z7uYDg2fqeE

Shining Force was my favorite childhood game, and I still enjoy playing it.

I love the orchestration, and I like that the guitars don't overpower the remix! I was happy to hear that you worked in my favorite tune, the ship battle theme. :) Obviously, you have an ear for music. Are you by any chance a fan of Symphony X?

Thanks :) I like Symphony X, though I haven't listened to them much--there are too many other power metal bands I've been listening to! I really enjoy the ship theme, too. I didn't quite get all the themes (I wanted to fit in the credits song, but it didn't quite work with the flow of the song), but I fit in as many as possible. It helped that I threw in Simone's theme and the town song at the beginning and end.

Gotta say, not normally into this type of metal but you knocked it out of the park. If you don't mind, what's your rig(s) for that whole thing? Distortion was very clean.

Thanks! I used 2 guitars--my Music Man/Ernie Ball BFR JP6 and my Fender Stratocaster Deluxe HSS. The Fender was in Drop B doing the low stuff and the Music Man was in standard tuning. Both were going through my Mesa/Boogie Roadster amp which is miced (or miked?) with an SM57.

The Mesa has such a great sound, that's really all I have to do to get that tone. Everything else is done with software after that. Drums are EZdrummer with the Metal Machine addon. Orchestra is all done with East West/Quantum Leap software, it's the best.

With a name like Abaddon, I'd imagine you were more into speed or death metal, or maybe even doom.

I'm only 2 minutes into the vid and I think you are quite talented.

Edit: Done listening a couple times and I must say that all your tracks now rank #1 among my favorite SF1 remixes, except the Darksol theme which comes 2nd. That being said, this is hard to beat. I'll see to splitting them into separate files when I get the chance.

Edit 2: You have no idea how long I've been scouring the web for tracks like these. Thank you!

Edit 3: Added to signature, just because.

Damn really? No pedals or a noise gate even? Anyway again, good job man. Keep killin' it.

I've heard that version before, and got a few ideas from it. I never thought it quite did it justice though because it isn't filled out enough. The differences in mix are more noticeable on really nice sound systems. It's definitely a great track, though, I was surprised to find anything of that quality in terms of SF remixes!

Good call with the signature thing, I'll have to do that now for my later posts. :)

Alright, I split the file into tracks as best as I could. I included the full medley too, minus the intro and outro. Dunno if that's the best recording quality but that should do the trick.

I'm going to be uploading a lossless file of the track that people can download. As soon as I get a chance today, which will be in like an hour.

Genmills, that was pretty epic indeed. Definently faving that track on my youtube account. Adding elements from the game as an intro, throughout the track and as an outtro was an excellent touch. Great job!

Thanks! I definitely put more effort into this video than anything I've done before on my channel, but I'm going to start putting out regular content now and see if I can build my channel a little. I just finished college so I'm taking a little time to pursue a music career since I probably won't get a chance to later!

Thanks everyone for the great feedback, I'm going to export a lossless file and get it uploaded now so everyone can download it. :)

Sweet. Do you have other classic video games in mind or are you going to take a broader approach?

Here is the free download! http://connorengstrom.bandcamp.com/

You can split the parts again if you like, but when I get back from a weekend vacation in a few days, I suppose I could export them separately in case people wanted each section to loops perhaps for integration into a mod for Shining Force. If I have time... I'm also thinking about making an orchestral only version available for download, but that will also have to wait until I get back.

I would like to do other remixes of awesome video game music, but I also have plans for lots of other things. I'm hoping to start a regular series of short videos called The Weekly Shred where I teach cool licks or riffs, maybe even famous ones from songs already. My next video is going to be for one of the songs off my last album, then after that I think will be The Epic Song of Epicness. Basically, I want to take famously epic soundtrack music, and make them into a medley. :) Pirates of the Caribbean theme, Skyrim theme, Requiem for a Tower, etc. etc. That will also probably turn into a series because of how many epic songs are out there!

Any ideas for other video game music you guys would like to hear remixed in my style?

Yeah, you're better off exporting to separate tracks yourself as my edits are far from perfect.

I have a few games in mind, but I'll just mention Shining in the Darkness since it's part of the series. The only fanmade remix I have of this game is this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f7eFwDuW0O8 There might be a couple tracks in the game that'll catch your interest.

Anyway, I'll try to put a very small list together. I know some non-shining games that lack remixes direly. XD
