Music Editor

Postby rubixcuber » Tue Nov 02 2010 12:37am

Here's the first release of my music editor for genesis roms.

Music editor: Download

As always, you should probably back up your rom before editing.

It supports SF1 and SF2 as is, and any game using the Cube format if you give it a rom profile.

This is the first iteration, so it's not perfect yet, and is missing a couple features and such, but it works.

The user interface still needs some work. There is a controls.txt included giving the commands, but let me know if you have any trouble with it.

Note that using the import/export you can move songs from game to game, but the samples and instruments will not match.

A couple samples:

Thanks to Wiz and nineko for reference on the sound driver and offsets to create profiles for all of the games.

This may be a lot to ask, but is there anyway to hear the music from the editor? Or do you have to run the game to hear it?

Not quite yet at least. I do plan on doing something along those lines, but for now you have to run it, yes.

This is very, very neat. Thanks rubicxcuber.

EDIT: I also wonder how well the other SF LoGI musics translate to SFII. The menu one sounded pretty good for most parts.

I'm getting AV when I'm trying to do something... :damnit:
export ->AV
change bank -> AV
change track -> AV
What are reqirement's to run it?
I'm running it under Win XP SP3+, having XNA, latest DirectX, NET Framework 3 SP 1 and so on...
Win Pro SP 2 do the same...
All I have - is blank form with 2 labels...
Help me to run this, please :blush:

Edit: Solved :) Just renamed to "Shining Force (U) [!].bin". Thanks, Rubixcuber!

Ah, sorry. Yeah, it assumes the US version of the rom at the moment and the standardized name. I need to figure out a better way to handle that.

Instead of renaming your rom, you can rename the profile in the profiles folder to match your rom though.

So, at first I've open expanded clear rom, then cleared staffs for song 0 and filled 5 tacts (how does it called in english?) for 2 instruments with a Futurama melody (just first easy melody that came to my mind). Then I saved the rom and launch it in the emulator. Intro was normal. Guardiana music too. But the first battle theme is corrupted. all instruments are still presents but drums became faster. So the melody takes separated from it...

I'll test it deeper ;)

Unfortunately I can't really test anything right this moment.

If you want to PM me your file, I'll take a look at what's going on later.

Sure let me know if you figure anything out.

And the interface still needs some work, so let me know if you have any suggestions for making it easier to use.

This is very, very cool.

I have not been able to adjust note length at all. Perhaps it's because my laptop does not have dedicated +/- keys?

Even when writing with all 16th notes and tons of rests this is lots of fun.

This desperately needs a preview function, but besides that the interface is very straightforward.

Thanks for the cool new program.

Glad you like it.

Note that you can also use the [ and ] keys to adjust note length for that exact reason.

I do intend to add a way to adjust all of the properties of the note without needing the shortcuts, but for now that should solve your issue.

Wow I'm really dense some times.

I misread your command list as using / as an alternate command.

I'll be spending the day copying piles of compositions into roms.

I think I'll try keeping notes on what voices are in what locations, but I don't think the names I make up for them will make sense to anybody else.

Thanks for the quick reply.

No problem. And good luck.

Hopefully there aren't too many bugs in the first release.

First bugs

I removed all but the first FM track from bank 0 song 0 in SF2, to find which piece of music it was. This caused some of the regular sound effects to change which voice was being played. Specifically the walking sound was replaced with strings.

I'm guessing I just screwed up some pointers by leaving the data completely blank, I'll try it with rests instead, and see if I get a better result.

Also I was unable to load any Gley Lancer music. I renamed the rom with (J) (E) and (U)
[Both the working roms I have started as (J) which is how it's labeled in the profiles]. It's just not bringing anything up at all, the same error I was getting with other games before I realized that they needed to be named the same as the profiles.

Now if you can just write a program that will explain to my wife why re-scoring genesis games is good way to spend my day off...

Well, I'd have to find a Glay Lancer rom to test. I'd recommend just copying the rom name and pasting it into the profile name. It has to match exactly for it to find it. I'm planning on making a profile management in the editor that will make it easier at some point.

If nothing at all shows up though, I'd have to say it's the profile.

As far as the voice issue, I'm not sure about that. I'll have to look into it.

Hey Rubix,

Any plans to be able to export sound effects (hits, find treasure, promotion, etc) from the roms? Right now it only does music.

Probably at some point, but I'm going to at least finish up the new battle editor before working on this again.
