Shining in the Darkness Editor + Very Alpha Map Editor

Discussion about this classic Genesis/Mega Drive game.

SitD Droprates

Postby darkwraith007 » Tue Sep 29 2015 10:45am

Not sure I can 'necro' a stickied thread but just wanted to give major kudos & thanks to those who created and helped create the game editor and map editor.
Specifically it allowed me to look at the 'drop rates' of certain items.

The game designers were very cruel and masochistic with how stingy they were with drop rate distribution.

I'm going to also include this information in my 'EasyType' SitD hack that I'm working on that significantly increases Gold/XP from monsters among other things; split into multiple patches so you can customize just how easy you want it. One of those patches will be a 'droprate' patch.

-Droprates were measured in certain fractions: 1/8, 1/16, 1/32, 1/64, 1/128, 1/256, 1/512 and finally 100%; this means the droprates ranged from 12.5% down to 0.195%
-The 'Slime' droprate for an Herb is originally 1/64 or 1.563%; that's for an item that costs just 12 gold
-And even worse were the droprates for weapons/armor from monsters; those droprates are 1/128 or 0.781%
-These droprates applied regardless of the actual sale value of the item
-The 'Great Flail' from 'Gollum' enemy has a default 0.781% droprate and is one of the best weapons in the game all the way to endgame for Milo with 3 attacks per turn
-The 'Dream Blade' cursed item from 'Brimstone' enemy has a default 0.781% droprate
-The 100% one was only used for 'event' bosses such as the first encounter with KaiserKrab to get the Royal Tiara

UPDATE
So there are several modifier values that I have yet to figure out but I'll paste my notes here in the hopes it helps someone.

-Modifiers-
146 = unknown value reduction (cursed)
192 = attack value reduction (cursed)
193 = defense 0 cursed effect (tamayoshi helm & glass armor)
195 = unknown defensive value (blessed)
201 = unknown defensive value (blessed)
204 = unknown defensive value (blessed)
205 = unknown defensive value (blessed)
206 = unknown defensive value (blessed)
207 = unknown value reduction (cursed)

-Use Effects-
4 = unknown effect; possibly specialized unique spell effect (same as muddle 3)
12 = unknown spell effect; possibly usable in battle
16 = unknown effect; possibly an event or story modifier (same as rune/dwarf key)
20 = unknown effect; possibly an event or story modifier (same as orb of truth)

It IS actually the single use flag, but it only appears in the description when Alchemist Item is also on and nobody can equip the item.

What is the "rate"? and how can I change it?

There is a difference between "Flee", "Back Away from Battle"?
"Watching Warily", "Wait"?
"Defend (robe)", "(shield)", "(muscle)"?

What is Concentration?
Rock Throw do a thing?

What does modifiers 201 to 206 (73 to 78) do? Resistances to Slow, Muddle, Sleep, Dispel, Desoul?

EDIT 07-24 = It's possible to change the enemies names?

65: + DEF %
79: + Magic RES
192: - ATK %
193: ATK = X
195: + Magic RES
196: + Fire RES
197: + Ice RES
198: + Thunder RES

146, 201, 204, 206, 207 = ?????

To use:
Open the Rom first (*must be in .bin format*). Then, change item # or Enemy # in the box. Make changes, then hit update item, or update enemy. Finally, click 'write rom' and the file SitDnew.bin will be created in the same directory as your current ROM.

Currently, all Monster and Item edits will be saved after you press Update "Whatever." Even the unknown values.

Also, chest lists and maps can be loaded, but that is it.

Please let me know if this works for you.
