It's actually been the perfect weather the past few days. I guess it's one of the 10 or so days out of the year where Tennessee isn't too hot or too cold.

It's 98 degrees and around here in Chi-town. What an excellent time for one of our AC units to break.

It's almost enough to make one want to go to the office.

Almost.

It was warmer today (high of 77), but fall has hit Germany.

And now facebook notifies you of someone's birthday both the day of and the day after? I really needed more notifications.

Since Monty Hall died, I suppose it's time to make some of you feel stupid with the classic math question named after him.

Suppose you are playing Let's Make a Deal and you can choose one of three doors. Behind one door is a large cash prize and behind the other two are goats. You choose a door, but do not open it. Monty opens one of the two remaining doors, showing it to be a goat. You can either stick with your first choice, or switch to the other door. Should you switch or stay?

Before someone suggests it, no, you are trying to win the cash prize. You are not trying to win a goat to f*ck.

Because with the prize money you can buy many goats. And here's the clever part. Every goat has a butthole.

Also, about half of the goats have pussy holes.

Now here's the hard part. How do you convince someone that the odds between the two doors aren't 50-50?

by Swalchy
To quote 21:

Well, when I was originally asked to choose a door,

I had a 33.3% chance of choosing right.

But after he opens one of the doors and then re-offers me the choice, it's now 66.7% if I choose to switch.

So, yeah, I'll take door number two, and thank you for that extra 33.3%.

The 'female partner' is apparently just in reference to her as a girlfriend or something, as she's been located out of the country but he had used her ID or something.

Still, she could have info on his change of mentality, weither she is guilty of anything or not.

The brother seemed, baffled and confused.

At the end of the day, a mentally disturbed human being killed human beings for a stupid reason, I don't care what it is, it isn't a good enough reason to do this. I give prayers and well wishes to those affected, even as an atheist, it doesn't matter what my religious views are, I will send prayers since THEY believe in it. Also, if you are in Nevada donating blood would help the victims greatly.

If you choose a door with possibly the car, there is a 1/3 chance that you have the car. The other two doors with the prize together have a 2/3 chance.

If one door is opened, revealing a goat, that door drops to zero and remaining 2/3 chance goes to the remaining door.
That remained my door suddenly increases to the 2/3 chance of having the car.
So switching increase chance of winning.

I hope this is a somewhat convincing argument.
Also if you win the goat, you can use it to clear fields by having it eat weeds.
Or you can cook the goat and eat it.

PostPosted: Tue Oct 03 2017 8:07am

Better, but it still allows for the standard misconceptions.

I choose my first door, it was a 1/3 chance of winning.

One door is removed, so there are two doors left. Thus the second door has a 1/2 chance of winning.

I should switch doors since 1/2 is larger than 1/3.

Oh yep:
When I was younger, I thought removing one door made it 50-50, and switching didn't matter.
Years later after discussing with Math people (I'm not a math person) and reading some stuff on stats, I sorta understood it a little more. Sometimes, hard to wrap the mind around these stat problems but if it gets me to think, I'm ok with these "conundrums".

It took 3 raids for me to catch an Entei. We're 12 days in and I have /one/. I feel like I'm slacking. But hey, at least curve balls work right now.
...
It is disconcerting that in a game as simple as this, one of the basic mechanics of the game was f*cked since day 1 and it took over a year to fix. Good thing there's still network errors during transfers (among other things) and randomly disappearing nearby lists and the occasional "connection to server lost" to keep me angry. f*cking Niantic.

Also, I'm down to needing just Unown and Mewtwo now. One I'll never find, and one I'll never get a pass for. YAY!

As for three door convincing...
It's simple. You're not giving people the proper motivation. Money vs goat isn't good enough. You have to tell them that behind two doors there's a liberal who will take their guns away, and behind one is an eminently bangable goat. With those stakes, their unreasonable self-confidence will be shaken, and I expect - without knowing the probabilities - they'd switch more often than not.

I just watched my first American football game. I think I'm converted. I've never really been into sports, but this match was super exciting/interesting! I went to Twickenham Stadium yesterday to watch the Cardinals vs the Rams. Being new to the whole thing, I decided to support the Rams since my friend had Gurley on his fantasy NFL team. Then, of course, they went and dominated the Cardinals!

It was hilarious because where we were seated, we were surrounded by Cardinals fans, so we were cheering while they were moaning and vice versa. Had a great time though and I'm gonna be watching some past Rams matches (last week and the week before) to decide if I want to support them or the Jags. The Jaguars owner also owns my local football/soccer team here in London - Fulham FC; not that I support them, but since I live in Fulham it adds a certain feeling of connection to the Jags to know that they have the same owner.

One of the matches I watch will be the recent Rams vs Jags game so I'll see who I find myself naturally rooting for.

Pretty cool! The NFL is huge here, especially because of fantasy sports. Neither the Rams or Jags have been very good recently, which is unfortunate. The jags have made a big effort to establish a fan base in London though, since they’re often there.

I’ve personally become very disenchanted with the NFL and my local team (Bengals) because of their awful attitude and player signings. I just root for my fantasy team (which wins me money most years) ;)

It's a truly amazing thing. Admittedly, since it so seldom actually happens, we don't really have the infrastructure to correctly handle it on any level. Hell, I don't think i've ever even *seen* a snow shovel in the flesh. One inch of snow that freezes over a road can be pretty dangerous when you don't have the equipment to deal with it.

However Atlanta at least, had enough foresight to invest in the appropriate infrastructure after the last big storm came through some years ago and it was nowhere near as debilitating - We haven't used any of that equipment since lol.

I got Dragon Quest VIII for 3DS, I was truckin' along and the cart popped out for some reason ( I grab it by the sides so I blame a sudden jolt). well apparently the game thought I was trying to cheat and reverted my save file to a previous one, losing like 10 hours of gameplay.

I look in my battle records and King Trodain compliments me for killing liquid metal slimes, even though the rollback put me before I even SAW them.

Thanks Enix employee, you sure stopped those cheaters, oh wait, you just pissed me off instead.

Also getting mad at work because the guy I trained is an incompetent shithead so he is doing a piss poor job and it's reflecting bad on me. I trained him just fine, he was the dumbass with the colander brain, like it's not like he flusters or anything, he straight up does things I never told him to do, or does the opposite of what I say, oh and get this, outright refusing to help people like the general public, AT ALL, because "he doesn't know".

So the Thanksgiving Pogo event has been good.

A nearby good nest was geodude, so I hit it hard. I've racked up over 2 million XP, easily passing level 39. Scored over 1500 geodude candies thinking I might put Ninetales into soloable territory.

Then they release Ho-oh, and I look like a goddamn genius for all my grinding. Caught my first one today. Plus I got another shiny Magikarp.

And now it's snowing.

It's a good thing I already have 2 Ho-Oh, as now with this weather everyone will disappear from raids. I didn't get a Raikou because people weren't out in the cold. I went out each weekend to the normal spots that I used to always be able to find a raid, and there was no one except for the first saturday.

Lucky, Even when it's nice nobody takes part in the raids around here.

As for snow. it's been rather nice of late, and the snow can stay away.

Suicune was my worst performance. I think I only did 3 or 4 raids, and got one. Still, I've gotten at least one if each legendary so far.

Just missing Mewtwo and Unown at this point. Although gen 3 will give me something to do. Less than 2 mil to hit 40 now. And 21 more rare candy to max my Lugia. Little goals keep it going.

It's getting rather cold down here in the South. I didn't move down here for this damn it! At least we rarely get snow like up North. I guess the cold weather gives it a Christmas time feel.

No luck on my job search as of late, so I'm just going to start it up again in 2018. Seems the new year usually has more job postings with the new calendar year. I've been procrastinating on finishing SF2 and starting SF3 both for the first time. I guess I'll concentrate on that the rest of 2017.

Hope everyone is well and staying warm.

Meanwhile in Canada...

It's been snowing like crazy for the last two days. Which normally means warmer weather -- Tonight was roughly 8.6'F. (-13'C)

Tomorrow, it's supposed to be -22'F. (-30'C) I am not looking forward to that.

8 inches of snow over the weekend.

Was a ton of fun while it lasted. Made about a dozen snow dicks on my roomates car, which stayed intact and erect for 3 full days.

Pics are in the SFC discord, for those juvenile enough to find these sorts of things funny.

I think Valids Story is basically this? I have it and it's a fun play but I haven't gotten too deep into it. Shadow Complex also, if you can deal with the absolutely stupid general plot (It's much more metroidian, but you do gain experience and levels for exploring map, killing enemies and the like.)

Dust: An Elysian Tail is solid and overall gorgeous, even if the levels of Furry are often overwhelmingly cringe-inducing.

Deleted the old stuff, so people will see the simple question.

Sometime recently I was drunk and downloaded Dex on steam, as it was on sale and looked like it might work as an rpg platformer. However, ten minutes in and the controls just feel like shit.

Has anyone played this? If so, any worth in sticking with it?

Furthermore, I also picked up Ys I on steam. And that gave me some Hall and Oates in the first few lines of dialogue. So really, does Dex has anything that can compete with that.

Hit level 40.

Just recently became able to solo Alakazam.
I've done psycho cut / focus blast, windy and non-windy, and psycho cut / future sight windy. Never thought I'd be hoping for Gastly spawns, but my margins could be better.

And this morning I soloed Ninetales...
With 3 near max water Gary's, and 3 weather boosted Golems.
It had Heatwave, and it was still ridiculously close.

Good on you for hitting 40. I'm only sneaking up on 39 (less than 5000xp to go).

After taking a Groudon to level 30, I've just been saving up my stardust. I'm not sure what I should spend it on. Maybe I should take some things past 30, as I've levelled up enough different things.

I just tried to watch Halo: Fall of Reach and I couldn't finish it. There were literally parts where they just showed a painting for the background and had two CG sprites walk across it. The animation was laughably bad.

I don't say this lightly, mainly because I love making fun of people who cry everything is fascism... but this LITERALLY felt like fascist propaganda. UNSC makes child soldiers, it's OK because they're the government and they have authority. Masterchief kills some fellow soldiers because they piss him off, he's told it's OK, you're just doing what we trained you to. Not a single one of the kiddies has a problem with effectively being enslaved or kidnapped because it's OK, it's the government!

Like, I was expecting some shadiness going in because I'm relatively familiar with the game's backstory, but holy geez, the way it was presented...

Anyway I guess what I'm saying is that it was a bad movie and people who liked the movie should feel bad, especially if they also are a fanatic about Ys. It's a good thing the chances of someone like that existing are so ridiculously low you might as well claim they also work as a medical technician or something equally ludicrous.

Man, I haven't complained about anything on the internet in a while. Forgot how good it made me feel.

Rune wrote: I just want to hit level 40 so I can commit suicide already.

I think I've actually been playing harder since hitting 40...

There are only so many things to do in the game, so having completed the quest for XP, you're left with powering mons, hitting raids, and getting gyms to gold. It is nice not having to mass evolve for hours at a time anymore...

I soloed my first Confusion Alakazam a few days ago (it was Confusion/ Shadow Ball) ... that was f*cking ridiculous. Took 3 maxed Gengar, Ttars at 39 and 33, and a 39 perfect Pinsir. Ended with 6 seconds left, and the Pinsir only had the tiniest sliver of health left. Confusion / Future Sight wasn't as bad, but I'm not even going to try Focus Blast...

Thing is, Psycho Cut/ Focus Blast is easy mode. Cut is weak enough that Gengar can survive well enough to eat a Focus Blast and hit back, so your highest DPS attackers live long enough to take a big chunk of HP off the boss...
Meanwhile, Gengar can only take 4-5 hits of Confusion, depending on it's HP/Defense stats, and Focus Blast will dodge glitch Ttar into oblivion. Think I'd be looking at a full team kill which just isn't viable. Could probably pull it off if I could get a f*cking Mewtwo, but the EX raid system is just asinine.

...

On a better note, I've managed to catch not one, but *three* 98% Kyogre. Once I get these triplets powered up, any fire raid bosses are going to be prey. But right now I'm torn between leveling my Rayquaza team and leveling Machamps to potentially 3 man Aggron or 2 man Ttar... with the Regis trio as a distant concern.

First world problems.

I don't know about that; forums are an easy way to ask questions/seek out like minded people such as yourself to discuss your favourite topic; and you're usually more likely to find saved topics than you are (I'm guessing) on things such as Discord (which I've never used btw; though as a VoIP thing (ta, Google), I can guess how it sorta works).

I've never used Discord, but mostly use forums and Facebook to talk to others. Some people probably use Reddit instead of forums too. I actually joined a forum about a year ago which is quite lively (looking right now, it has 73 members online atm). I think they are still a good medium of communication if the main subject matter is niche. I haven't built up any friendships on that forum, since I've only posted 6 times, but reading through the past posts and threads has provided a priceless font of knowledge and resources for me to be able to continue my hobby, specifically: watching/finding subbed Japanese variety shows, also gaining the confidence to try to sub some of the unsubbed shows myself, and knowing which subbers and other outlets to follow for more information on shows and the comedians/guests.

I think forums have their place but these days, they will only be successful (a subjective term I'm equating to having a good flow of daily messages in threads) if they have a relevant purpose to draw in enthusiastic members - e.g. subbing videos, emulators (allowing devs to talk to users), etc.
