Shining Cartography

Postby shining_nexus » Tue Jan 29 2019 7:13am

Hello! I am working on a project which I've dubbed "Shining Cartography" and in this project I will attempt to draw/map out certain games in the Shining series. At this time I have decided to map out Shining in the Darkness, Shining Force, Shining Force 2, Shining Force CD, and Final Conflict. It's a big endeavor, but I am very determined to complete it no matter how long it takes. I find drawing and mapping video games while playing them is a very relaxing activity for me, so I'm confident I will be continuing this project for a while. Also, my love and adoration for these Shining games will definitely keep me engaged.

I discovered this new found hobby of mine from playing Etrian Odyssey V on the 3DS. The first-person dungeon crawler RPG genre was always a type of game that I enjoyed playing, but it was the games map drawing mechanic that engrossed me in entirely. I never thought I would have enjoyed meticulously drawing maps until this game. In the past, I've always looked online or guides for these maps, or just memorized them, so I've never experience drawing my own until Etrian. I then found Jeremy Parish, who also enjoyed this activity and completed maps on games like Metroid and Metal Gear.

This inspired me to create my own mapping project on my free time and I am looking forward to it. Not going to lie, this also excites me because it gives me a reason to play through these games to the end. You can check out my blog which I will update regularly on the progress for this project.

I also have other content on there if anyone is interested, which is mostly about my own video game related opinions. I will also be updating this thread as I make progress through this project. Any constructive feedback on how I can improve these maps are always appreciated! Thanks for reading!

Updated my blog with a part 2. This time, I found a mistake with my spacing on Level 1 and it was bad enough to where I had to re-do the whole thing. It's okay though because I think it came out great and now I can make my way to the next trial.

Making my way through The Cave of Truth and the difficulty is starting to ramp up. Enjoyed this session and hoping to map more often throughout this week.
