The PSP "Shining" games...

Postby rid1ey » Thu Jun 08 2017 3:02pm

having played all the shining games and spin-off's with the exception of the arcade titles, mobile titles and all S*ny playstation generation titles due to region lock.
now having access to a PSP and seeing HEARTS, BLADE & ARK reasonably cheap i was wondering how they are to play for a non-japanese speaker and if they have the 'shining' feel to them?

i kinda liked soul 2 and would love to have played tears.

also are the S*ny generation titles playbable via the S*ny network on PS3/4?

(NEO,TEARS,EXA,WIND etc)

Shining Blade it's a good game, it's technologically superior than SF Feather, and like Feather, you don't need to know japanese to enjoy the it

or try SF Feather first

You should wait for Shining Ark, the translation patch of Shining ark is nearly finished according to Bad Bunny (the translator and patch creator).
For Tears, Wind Exa and Neo, you can use an emulator(the framerate and loading problem for Tears, Exa and Neo would be far less important on emulator).
But Tears is made to be played with a friend (Wind too but, the solo is better than into tears) alone, the gameplay is boring and frustrating.

I think playing Tears or Wind(and watching Tears X wind even if the anime is mew) before Blade enhance the quality of the experience as Shining Bladeis more or less "Final Conflict" for new Gen Shining.
Many character return from previous games and the story make some refrence to them and even to mobile games that are canon Shining Road ans Wind X that are canon title(and Wind X is even a major title for new gen Shining storyline from the few we know about it)

thanks for your informative response.
I got back in to 'shining' last year being a fan since 1993 up to the dreamcast and Sega dropped the series. I heard a star ocean sound track on YouTube that rekindled my love for the haunting music is shining force 3. the playstation games never made it to the UK frustratingly so I fell from the loop though played soul/2, ROTDD and feather - tears looked very 'shining' to me the others not so much. but I'm not here to rip the post camelot games apart more so embrace them. that's great news about a patch for ark! I had no idea. are there patches made for hearts and blade also? I have purchased all 3 games for psp so they will arrive soon.

I recomend both Blade and Ark, they are good strategy rpgs with some interesting characters, unfortunately they are too easy. Hearts is more unintuitve (this word exists?) and less friendly for non japanese speakers, but I managed to finish it and started to write a guide that I left incomplete but can be useful for the second half of the game.
I learned english playing Shining Force 2!

There is a fan translation in progress for Blade, but there is no official news since August 2016 (when the team had receive the autorization of cyberakuma tu use his fan translation)

And actually for Blade, the team also think to make a hard difficulty patch.

no IA hack, but no XP gain after the battle(just after an attack like oldschool shining force) and less powerful player attack

thanks for the replies.

i might leave hearts as a 'maybe' then and focus on blade and ark, first.

where can i find a link to the patches for blade and ark, please?

did the american ps2 titles ever get released on the playstion network?

are they available on ps3/4?

how did shining resonance sit with the fanbase? looked decent.

AND! ...the anime series which ones are there and did they receive english dubbing?

the pacht for blade and ark are in project, none of them have been released (but According to the translator, Shining Ark translation patch should be released in few times, I think the patch will be released before autumn)

there is no news for Shining blade patch since august 2016, but the main quest have been translated in a blog.

there no released on PSN or PS3/4 for the PS2 Shining, but they are very easy to emulate on PC (even on a 5 years old config).

Shining Resonance is an excellent game but there is nearly nothing of Shining in it, the game is more a cross over between Tales of(battle system is a more strategic and complex Tales of gameplay) , Breath of Fire(the storyline) and Atelier series(the game is a dungeon RPG and most of the healing item need to be crafted as they are very expensive) with some dating sim element and Tony taka design.

It's also one of the most beautiful JRPG on PS3(only Persona 5 is more beautiful) the game is less open than the 2 last Tales of, but the game run on constant 60FPS with better texture (while the 2 last Tales of are between 20 and 30 FPS on PS3)

the anime series which ones are there and did they receive english dubbing?

The 2 anime are Shining Tears X Wind and Shining Hearts(I think Shining hearts received an US release but maye without dub), Tears X wind received a French official released but only in sub.

Tears X Wind is not the same story than tears or Wind. It's more Shining Wind scenario 2.

Actually Shining Tears, Wind and Tears X Wind remind me Shining force 3 in their construction.

Shining Tears is the first story introducing Xion and his camrades, the Weissritter, during a war reminding Shining force 1 story (the Ennemy realm is named Runevale).
Wind take place 6 month after Tears, some people from japan have been dragged in Endias, the world of Shining Soul 2 and Tony shining in a Magic Knight Rayearth-like story.

Shining Tears X Wind follow one of the character of Shining Wind who have been part away from his friends (like Julian in Shining Force 3) and a meet and make a team with Tears characterswhile helping Shining wind character with the event of Shining wind.

thanks for clearing that up - i have a much better understanding now of post camelot 'shining'.

I'm going to watch the hearts series first then play hearts with a guide.

I will wait for the patches of blade and ark.

it' a a shame the post camelot shining is not embraced on this site more though I have seen some passionate defenders!
