Team Shining: Original Timeline

Post by MXC »

Hello everyone and welcome to Team Shining: Original Timeline.

I have been kicking around the idea of doing a massive Team Shining: Original Timeline. If this concept isn’t obvious, then let me explain further. As a group, we will play through all of the “original timeline” games. These games include all of the Genesis/ Mega Drive games, CD, and Game Gear (Shining Force 1, 2, CD, FC, and SitD) but will not include Shining Wisdom. While I know that Shining Wisdom is part of the original timeline, I also know that it’s a pain to emulate and that there is very little interest in the game itself. Furthermore, this is going to be a large undertaking as it is and SW would compound that even more. Besides, the connections are fairly loose (and poorly translated) so it’s not much of a loss (I did enjoy it though so play it when you get a chance!) As an aside, I've picked this time to start this as no other Team games are active except FC which is nearing completion.

We will be playing each of these games in chronological order based upon their stories and not on release date. The games will not run at the same time meaning that we will have to complete Shining Force 1 before we start Shining Force CD (and so on). I've decided not to do any hacked/ edited versions of any of the games. We will be playing vanilla and when presented with a difficulty, I'm suggesting doing Normal but it is ultimately up to the person that starts each game.

As a group, we will also decide on different crossroads presented in each game. We can either hash this all out early on or as we draw closer to decision points. I'd like it if we could get a close-consensus on whether character 'x' will join the Force and (if they do) which character they will replace. The same will apply to stat boosting items but rings will be dependent on the preference of the current battler. If it gets to the point that it takes too long to make these decisions, then it will be up to the person currently running a battle.

Now onto some specifics of battles:

I sent PMs out to ten people and heard back from eight (myself included) of which one person declined. The other two members never responded and were therefore not included in the below list of battle allocation. The people that I sent PMs to are those that are currently active in Team games (only a few have run this past year so the sample is a bit small). I have allocated battles so that each of us have 17 (they may not be balanced in regards to early/late game-ness) which allows 40 battles to be passed off to reserves. I did this in case those other 2 people finally get back to me and want in but also because (I hope) other people will be interested in doing a few battles in general (some of the more recent members of Team SF2 for example, or a few old players that don't partake as often in Team games anymore). If I do receive an overwhelming amount of reserves wanting battles, I will drop the 'main group' down to 15 or 16 battles each.

Battles themselves have been random to an extent. I asked each of the main members to give me 10 battles they would really like to do. For each of them, they all received at least 7 of the battles they wanted so I feel pretty good about that. Otherwise, the rest were mostly randomize across the other games (the one big discrepancy will likely be seen between books 1 and 2 of Shining Force CD as I just lumped them all together. The randomization was somewhat altered to try and get everyone a fair percentage of each game (for example, zexxar has 10% of SF1, 9% of CD and FC, and 11% of SF2). Everyone isn't completely even across all games, but we're pretty close.

I don't think anyone has back-to-back battles but if you do, I apologize. Per usual though, you are allowed to trade battles if you so desire. The only exception to this is if you want to trade a battle marked 'Reserve'. The only time you can trade with a reserve is if an actual member claims the reserve battle and wants to trade with you. The reason I have it set this way is because I wanted some decent battles left for reserves to claim. In the event that nobody else really wants to take these battles though, we will distribute them more to the 'main group'. And don't be shy about telling me if I missed a battle or the name of the battle should be changed; most of these were taken from other Team games (so thanks to those guys for doing it in the first place!)

For those interested as a reserve, the battles are simply first-come. For the time being though, I'm going to limit each reserve to 6 battles each. This number may increase based upon interest for the game in general (if we only have a few reserves, they will get more and if we get a lot of reserves, I may strip the main group of a few battles each.) If you are interested though, you don't have to pick 5, but it is the current maximum.

With all of that said, let me get on to the massive list of battles. As usual, post any questions, comments, or concerns in the topic (or PM me though the topic is preference). Battles are listed below:

Re: Team Shining: Original Timeline

Post by zexxar »

First battle is done. I got Gong before the battle and some level ups sadly Tao didn't get one because of 6 point :( .
I was quite tempted to do the next reserve battle immediatley but I thought that would be mean if no one else has the chance to claim it.

But at this point I would like to claim one of the later reserve battles (to tower of the ancients or ancient tower) because otherwise I will have a break for more than 20 battles which is quite long.

Captain's log, stardate 07052013.
Today began the TSF Original Timeline's voyage to explore all classic Shining Force games. Nobody can say if we are ready for this venture. Many on bord talk about a "50 year mission" and I can't tell if they are joking or accurate. But they are all good men and women and know what they've gotten themselves into. We will need to pick up additional personel on our way, which may prove to be the worst of our delays.
All that is left for me to do is try to lift the spirits and fulfill my dutys swiftly and assidiously.

You gave me my favorite SF2 battle though, so I'll forgive you :excited:

EDIT

if we can claim reserves, I'd like an early SF1 battle as well, if no one takes it though. I don't really mind too much, but my first battle is currently the Road to demon castle, 20 battles into the project. So if no one takes em I'd take one.

If you're still looking for reserves, I would like to sign up. I would like the following battles, if I may be allowed...

SF1 - Laser Eye
SF1 - Balbazak
SFCD - Graveyard
SF2 - Zeon

If I were to only get one of those battles, I would have it be the Zeon battle.

You said you hadn't played these games so I skipped you ;P I did make sure you get some nice ones though so fret not :)

And at this time, the reserve battles are not open for grabs but you can do the current battle if you'd like. You can work a trade out with someone too.

Bulzome- definitely looking for reserves. I'll mare you down for those battles ;)

Yeah I figured that was the reason. It's all good ;)

I don't mind playing the next one, but it'll wait a little bit. The university semester is ending this friday and is being a little terrible. Doing it this weekend max, unless that's too late for you. At least it'll give more time to reserves to show up. I'm thinking maybe part of those that would be interested in some of these games don't necessarily come 'round in this particular forum. Maybe visibility is being a little problem here, reserves wise.

Super stoked about this; one concern though. I never managed to get the shining force CD game successfully emulated. While trying to stay in bounds of what we can discuss, what system are we using for CD and is there a reliable website to get it from?

Also, I'm down for whatever battles; I've actually never played more than sf1 and 2, but I've always wanted to break into the other ones. Seems like an awesome chance

We will be using Gens+ (it runs all the games we have here) but I won't be able to help out with getting SFCD to work though. Gens+ : http://segaretro.org/Gens_Plus" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;!

If you're unsure about getting certain games to work, just don't sign up for those. Otherwise, pick 5 battles currently labeled as reserved.

SF1: Road to the Tower
CD: Astreet Island
CD: Thames Valley
Final Conflict: Mishaela
SF2: Odd Eye

Would've loved to try a shining in the darkness battle, but oh well. It looks like a pretty short game by the list; mebe I'll just actually play it. :shifty: Mostly just picked at random, haven't ever done most of these battles before. If anyone else wants them that's cool.

Shining in the darkness isn't a tactical RPG Antman, it's a dungeon crawler. At least that's what I've heard. Thus the small list of levels (and of people willing to play them).

EDIT

Was thinking about it and I would like to propose Ouch as our difficulty in SF2, as opposed to normal. It has a (supposedly) better AI, but without the extra edge like on super.

That 'supposedly' is big and I doubt there is a difference. It's fine with me though, ehow just needs to remember.

If a battle for SF1 or SF2 need a reserve let me know...I can fill in some if needed, but currently I don't have a lot of free time on my hands.

We will be playing vanilla and when presented with a difficulty, I'm suggesting doing Normal but it is ultimately up to the person that starts each game.
:shifty: ;)

Looking forward to Alterone battle.

Speaking of which, Alternate Timeline could use your input, maybe.
