how does THIS game relate to the rest of the series?

I have played this game (though some time ago) and it's predecessor and was wondering where it sat in the timeline, it's connections with the games before and after it ...and how 'shining' fans view it?

AFAIK, it's just a name dump into a game that doesn't at all connect to the original/Camelot games. Pretty much everyone hates both Shining Souls and just about everything released since then. I haven't played them myself so I'm not entirely sure.

thanks for the reply - is there anybody that knows it inside out and views it 'canon' and can detail it's connections?

is the story a cruddy translation? the characters do waffle on about rubbish but the core 'game' is what it is and is not terrible.

Actually, for the connection...

Shining Soul 1 can be seen as a remake of the whole Shining Force series or the first fight against Dark Dragon 1000 years prior Shining force.

connection to Soul 2... it's pretty hard.

Soul 2 is set in the same world than the modern shining (Klantol is in Shining tears and Blade), but the story begin by saying the fight against dark dragon happened in the past and Boken is in the game, So it's maybe in the same universe than the old and Shining soul, maybe not.

The question is more Are the modern shining are in the same canon as the old? We don't know. There is some ester egg and hint for the response "Yes" but any real proof.

i guess it's up to the individual to decide if developers and companies say this that and the other. it says shining... what are the easter eggs, please?

For all the modern Shining:
-the Race (beastmen, centaur, dwarves...)
-The Ancient race (with the Eye design as an obsession in all their creation)

In Shining Tears:
-Yoghurt is in the game as a transformation
-there is a centaur named Arthur
-the name of the fairy with Cupido is the same that the named of one of the pixie from Holy Ark
-The realm were the game happen is named Shildia, it's a mistranslation of Shieldia(it was a reference of Guardiana)
-the name of Blanc neige is Gardenias, it's a mistranslation of Guardiana(And it's said in the game that people of Runevale, her kingdom came from another continent long time ago)

in Heart:
Sakuya is named Maxima here, Maxima mean in Japanese "Max of now", the developer of the game said it's a title given to the Leader of the Shining force in honor of Max

in Blade:
-there is Dark Dragon (even if his design is different) and he was already sealed 1000 years ago (and maybe 1000 years ago before)
-There is a kid named Julian
-The group is the Shining force (it's said it's the name given the group fighting Dark Dragon)
-it's suggested there is other continent that the 2 seen in the game.

In Ark:
-there is Adam in an ancient ruin

spoil because it's spoil event from late in the game
-
WARNING: SPOILER!

Actually, it's possible to assume the modern Shining storyline are set few time before Holy Ark (and nearly in same time for Ark) but on another continent.

thanks for all your insightful information! guess shining soul 2 is the missing link between the (camelot) classics and the PS2 onwards generation of shining (be it if fans or camelot like it or not)

are there any pictures/videos of julian & adam in shining ark on the Internet?

also i'm sure i heard somewhere volcanon & mitula made in into shining force exa?

seems like there are more connections than it is credited for.

Shining Soul 2 and Shining Exa are very good games and a lot of people like it and wish theres sequels, but they dont seen very shining for camelot era fans. They work better as standalone games, a good example for this is that both ignores its prequel (souls 1 and neo). I had a lot of fun playing both.

I don't know, as I never played Exa. but, from what I read on japanese wiki of Shining Wind X (a classical TRPG for mobile), Zeon is maybe in it.
But actually Force Neo, Force Exa, Force Feather and Force Cross are not set in same same continuity than the other modern Shining (nor the old).
They don't have the same producer.
The producer of these titles have stated each of his titles are reboot of Shining force (and not Shining) in different timeline (while tsuyoshi Sawada, the producer of the other titles have keep a continuity between them).

The airship from Feather is the same used in SF2

I understand that the body of Dark Dragon in Blade is not the original body

Yeap, It's stated that his body is not the original and that due to his incomplete resurrection, he is not able to use his true form
