Scen 1 Battle 16 - Empty investigation spot on mountain

Postby mutatedspleen » Sat May 01 2021 11:17pm

So I'm in battle 16 of scenario 1, the plains between Aspia and Storich, and I somewhat haphazardly parked Eldar on the top of a mountain, didn't look at the screen when I went for hold, and much to my surprise, found out that instead of hold, it was an inspect. I've definitely not examined this pot before, and as far as I can tell from any treasure lists or guides or anything, there's no treasure here. So why have a random empty inspect spot in a place only one character can actually go? Any idea what this might be?

As far as I can tell looking at the game code, there is no item here. Probably would have been a mithril if it did exist.

The item function is located at 0605b154. Breaking here will help determine how to read an item. (This is mostly for me)

So maybe there was supposed to be an item here, but they forgot to put it in, or decided against it or some such. Strange, I wonder if there are more mystery inspect spots that have nothing in them sitting around.

I can always put something there for our translation project. Need to check the flags to see if there was intended space. Maybe we put an unobtainable item there ;-).

100% should be Moogie Arrow.

This does beg the question though if we should plant the various gameshark weapons around.

I think that would be brilliant. It would freshen up the game a bit more with some little extras like that.

What is there to lose? It’s not as though SEGA are going to do it!

K0D, wondering if it would be possible to determine a treasure by random selection of a given list.

We have an investigation spot. We provide a list of 3 possible items. The player gets one of those 3 randomly.

We have a random function for dialog with the shelves and chickens...

I'm not sure when it would be determined, but I don't think it should be scummable. In other words, the items are determined for each run on starting a new game or new chapter and a different result would only happen in another game (or chapter start if that was the case).

Random is not possible. I would have to write entirely new game code to accommodate for it.

It was worth a try. :)

So beyond this one blank spot, it would require replacing one with another specifically...

Not necessarily. I would need to understand the battle area a lot better, but it should be possible to add new items in battle. Walkable areas are a different question entirely, but also possible.

The major hurdle, is documenting the game flags. Finding out what every flag does, and what is available, is a time consuming task on my part.

Could always add some of the unobtainables in special deals of shops that would fit the timeframe. I THINK stha was capable of doing that (not within the editor though). Not sure if there would be problems (also there's no guarantee sf3's shops work the same way, I'll just assume they do).

If flags are figured out, one good spot for items would be Aspia's treasure room in scenario 1. Pretty sure those were never openable.

Is that location where Pyra lost her staff?

Ehh, probably not. It's stats suggest it was intended to be an late game weapon. In fact the majority of the unused weapons are extremely powerful for Scenario 1, the Ultra Axe, for example is the strongest tomahawk in the game.

I'm suggesting placing the removed staff found in the games code there.

Personally I would like that game changer or not.

Oh, you are referring to the spark wand. I would have to fix that to link it to a special attack then.

Yes @knightofdragon that's the one.

I think it was in an unfinished state or was redundant when comparable to the top tier weapons.

I don't remember the stat's of it but may an MP drain attack if it offers no MP regen or something Pyra-like.

Y'all, I'm a little toasty on the alcofun, but I'm so glad this took off into a serious convo. Was this not a known spot before? Like, did I happen to just randomly stumble upon a fun usable spot for the translation? That would make me so happy <3

It was a known spot before, but K0D only recently discovered the ability to do things like add an item here.

Your timing was great to start this discussion.
