Almost. It is a branch of Yabause - more advanced.

I thought the wide screen hacks for SF3 were already completed?

I thought they were done but they weren't tested all the way through the entire game which is why they are all listed as 90% on your website, but I probably just misunderstood.

Anyway, thanks for your wide screen patches on this game as well as the hacks you've released for other Saturn games. They are much appreciated!

Yeah, it's my channel.
Well, I updated patches for all scenarios. Now they all support a widescreen. But I had to leave the text clouds in a stretched state, since the font distorting and practically became unreadable on real hardware. I propose to test the patches to all who are interested. Patches can be found here:

If I'm understanding correctly, these are intended for use on emulators only since the text boxes will be stretched on a real Saturn. Once you get into the 3D scene in the demo video, the text boxes look correct.

Will they work with any emulator or just the ones you list? Maybe those are just the ones you've tested with?

Looks like the Sc2 download link is broken.

In the presented video, text clouds have the correct proportions. But it will look like this only on the Yaba Sanshiro emulator. On all other emulators and on real hardware, the text of the dialogs will be distorted. To prevent this from happening, I left the text clouds stretched so that they were displayed the same everywhere (on emulators and on the console).
Link for scenario 2 now working.

In order to stop the font-distortion, would a thinner form of the font used work out when stretched?

That is unfortunate. Any hope of a solution where we can have widescreen and proper text display on original hardware?

I'm guessing if it were possible you would have done it already. :)

Correct. Saturn's hardware showed good sprite scaling speed, sacrificing quality. So, in order to preserve the quality display of the font, it cannot be scaled only in width. Nothing can be done about it.

I suppose we could offer it as a patch option specifically for use with that emulator...

Currently, the patches do not have any binding to the emulator.

Right, but I mean like we have now for the other resolution mod. With a radio button noted:
Widescreen mod (for use with x emulator only)

I'm not sure we need to for this, but I was thinking out loud.

No, there is no need for such a note, since the result will be the same everywhere (emulator or console is not important).

This is not true necessarily. We can take a 16:9 font and scale it to 4:3 using nearest neighbor scaling. This should produce a nealry acceptable result when rendering back at the 16 by 9 format. This is essentially how the wii achieved wide screen results with a 4:3 video buffer.

I did not quite understand what you mean. When the image is narrowed by the Saturn video processor, a part of the image is lost - pixels are eaten. On large sprites it is not as noticeable as on the font. Thus, when we narrow the image horizontally, some vertical lines no longer appear. For example, instead of the letter "m" we will see "n" because the middle vertical line in the letter will be lost.

Interesting, although the Shining Holy Ark has the same engine as the Shining Force 3, but the font in the first case can no longer be scaled, as it is drawn using the unscaled NBG2 layer.
