Lowe

Post by Lucifer »

If the character Lowe (Anri's throne room/Force Adviser) is indeed Lowe from SF1 (Which I'm fairly certain he is), then why does he need to call for a healer when Anri is "poisoned"?

I checked the japanese line out of curiosity and... translation oversight. It's just "Ahh! Lady Anri!!" in both the original and remake. (あっ!アンリ様ーっ!/ あっ!アンリさまーっ!)

Likely because the English translators didn't really care about the consistency of the series and just put anything in that sounds good.

Well it has been 50 years, and Lowe was an implied slouch. I wouldn't put it past him to have just stopped his training all together after the war to the point of losing a considerable amount of his healing abilities.

I knew you were joking - it was more a correction of Domingo's concept of time than you ;)

Fair enough. Been awhile since I've seen it though. ;P

So basically the translators just made it seem like he lost what little usefulness he had during the time of peace.

I wouldn't put it past him. Lowe never seemed like the hardworking diligent sort.

Very interesting about the translation. I often get the sense that prior to Shining Wisdom Sega of America was giving each Shining series game to a different translation team, which would certainly explain why whoever translated SF CD didn't know better than to have Lowe call for a healer (which may or may not make sense, but at best sounds rather incongruous to anyone who's played SF1). What I really don't get, though, is why the translator saw fit to add something to the script which wasn't in any way called for by the storyline, culture differences, or any other demand of localization. Very unusual for a time when video game translators by-and-large stuck to the script.

There's usually a team of translators working on a game, however - it's not just one person doing all the work. It's why you'll often find inconsistencies even within the same game. It really could just be a case of someone from the same team, even, having worked on a separate section than the next person.

As for sticking with the script in the early games - not quite. one need only look to SF1 to see that that wasn't always the case. The official translated script diverged a -lot- from the original.

The differences in the SF1 translation are chiefly omissions, which were almost certainly due to space limitations. The SF1 translators stuck to the script as much as the cartridge format allowed them to.
