Misc Feedback Part 2

Postby legalize freedom » Tue Aug 30 2016 12:59pm

One of the things I'm working on this go round is to make all the messages consistently present tense. Previously they have been a mix of present and past. For example:
Medion uses the Medical Herb - present
Medion used the Medical Herb - past

There are a couple that become clunky when using present tense and I'd like feedback on how to handle them.
One is for Charm and one for Silence.
Medion's mind has been stolen!
Medions's magic has been sealed!

This got me thinking there may be better phrasing for these. Consider what the other similar lines say.
Medion is paralyzed!
Medion falls asleep!
Medion is confused!
Medion is lost in illusion!
Medion is poisoned!

These could become similar, such as:

Medion is charmed!
Medion is silenced! or
Medion's magic is sealed!

Or we can come up with a creative way to make these present tense with different wording. Maybe:
Medion is under your control
Medion obeys your every command
Medion falls in love

Another thing that I believe could be improved is the message when an attack produces a Slow effect. For some reason Slow doesn't show a status effect icon or other indication like the other status effects do. Should there be something in this message that eludes to the slow effect by name?
Current:
Medion's Defense and Agility decrease!
Possible:
Medion is slowed - Defense and Agility decrease!

Let me know how these possibilities sound to you.
Thanks in advance for the feedback!

Love the idea of making them all present tense... they tell you exactly what is affecting the character...

With regards to the slow effect, the current message works fine for me... it accurately describes what is happening...

I dunno, It could go either way, but I agree, let's be consistent. It all depends on how we want to look at it, if the message is a result of the attack, then it would be past tense, since the message is describing what happened. But the message could also be stating what the new status is, so present tense applies. Personally, I am a fan of the past tense version, so that the message is a commentary of the attack, and not a voice of god telling me what is going on.

For the slow issue, I would say Medion became weary or Medion is weary, I never liked how games used "slowed". Even tired works better.

Some additional considerations:

The messages in question are shown for both friend and foe, so some of the examples I threw out above wouldn't work. (I'll edit the original post) So "under your control" would need to be worded something like "is out of control" which doesn't work as well.

Currently, I'm leaning towards these:

Medion is charmed!
Medion is no longer charmed!

As for Slow, it is a spell and a weapon effect. There are several of these in the game such as support, attack, resist and slow (as well as well as several effects that don't have spells such as poison, paralyze, Illusion and frozen feet). The messages that are shown when you come down from one of these effects is the same for both spell and weapon effects.
When you come down from a Slow effect (spell or weapon) you get this message:
The SLOW spell on Medion wore off!
In addition to the initial changes, I propose "effect" be swapped with "spell" so these messages work better for both situations.
The SLOW effect on Medion wore off! or maybe
Medion recovers from SLOW

So having said that… This is where my thought of inserting the spell wording in the initial message comes from. As of right now when you get slowed (spell or weapon) you get this message:
Medion's Defense and Agility decrease!
and when you recover from slow you get this one:
The SLOW spell on Medion wore off!
That's the goofiness I'm trying to repair with this suggestion. These two messages as proposed might look like this:
Medion is Slowed - Defense and Agility decrease!
The Slow effect on Medion wore off!
However, the spell reference isn't strictly needed once you remove "spell" from the "wore off" message. And if we changed this one, we would have to try to fit the spell name into at least the support one as well. Most of the others elude to the spell by name:

Medion's Magic Defense increases!
Medion's Attack increases!
Medion's Defense and Agility increase!
Medion's Defense and Agility decrease!
Medion falls asleep!
Medion is confused!
Medion is lost in illusion!
Medion's magic has been sealed!
Medion's body is paralyzed!
Medion is poisoned!

I'm currently leaning towards these:

Medion's Defense and Agility decrease!
The Slow effect on Medion wore off!
