In retrospect "fearsome monsters" probably has better flow than
"terrifying monsters" (p.44). Oh well.

====
p.48
====

[A country founded by peddlers from foreign lands, Rune's center of commerce]

Long ago, peddlers from foreign lands came together to do business. In
time, that gathering gave rise to a guild, and it now comprises the
country of Rindo. Various shops line this castle town, and business
marches on regardless of whether the sun is up or down. Rindo owns a
splendid harbor, so among other things, exotic goods and powerful
armor are on offer for sale.

[Mayor (lit., Chairman) Rindo]

[← His personality is more that of a chief merchant than a king. He
doesn't allow any unscrupulous business dealings, and it seems he's
quite a strict person.]

[Their business dealings are fair, and the whole country is filled
with the spirit of mercantilism]

The national coat of arms makes use of the balance scales, and they
handle all trade fairly. However, it seems that as long as the price
is paid, they're willing to do business with absolutely anyone. As you
may expect of merchants, the national color is gold.

====
p.49
====

[Maintaining a harbor, Rindo is Rune's center of commerce both in name
and in fact]

[→ Its adjoining nations are Alterone and Manarina. If you can make
use of the harbor, you can visit from anywhere.]

It was originally a barren land, but thanks to the harbor and to the
hard work of the merchants, a splendid municipality has come into
being. Because it is a town founded by immigrants, you will find
buildings with square roofs standing in a row with tent-like
buildings. You can see many exotic and eye-catching sights.

Population: 2130
Area: 1934km² (746.7 mi²)
Climate/Industry: Mediterranean/commerce

====
p.50
====

[Manarina]

[A small nation governed by magicians who engross themselves in
esoterica in the mountain recesses]

A small nation that was quietly founded in the mountain recesses by
brilliant magicians who disliked being used by anyone, even a king.
While it may be called a country, it is so small that it comprises
nothing more that a citadel. Using the research facilities that have
been set up in the castle, the magicians are able to conduct their
research day and night. As far as they're concerned, these conditions
may well be called heaven.

[Otrant]

[← He goes to great personal pains to ensure that the people of his
country can conduct their research as each sees fit.]

[A kingdom of ambitious people working toward the discovery of new magics]

Among them, there are also people who conduct useless research.
However, they all have twice as much passion for magic as the average
person. The national color is purple, and the coat of arms--which
bears a serpent, the incarnation of sagacity--perfectly captures the
spirit of the people.

====
p.51
====

[Though its history may be brief, this is a holy land for magicians]

[→ Its principal neighboring state is Rindo, but many of the mountain
passes are cumbersome. They have little contact with other countries.]

Although the county itself has a brief history, it seems that quite a
long time ago there was a magician who conducted research here.
Consequently, it could be that this land--which seems empty at first
glance--may be concealing some mysterious secret.

Population: 238
Area: 15km² (5.8 mi²)
Climate/Industry: continental/agriculture, commerce

Dang, I wish they had this sort of guide for SF CD. Some very nice details, even if each nation seems defined by a single generalization(as one would expect for a video game world).

[Bustoke]

[The only homeland in the entire world for the people whose blood is
mixed with that of the beasts]

A kingdom that holds the heavily wooded land in north Rune as its
territory. Their national industry centers on forestry, and lumber is
the heart of their export products. The people prefer a modest
lifestyle, and so they lead almost entirely self-sufficient lives.
Because it is a nation founded by half-beasts, they have little
cultural exchange with outsiders. It seems they have no allies or
friendly nations.

[Zylo]

[← Apparently because he is the king of the werewolves' descendants,
the blood of the wolf runs more strongly in him than in anyone else.]

[Making good use of their abundant lumber, a picturesque country that
exists in harmony with nature]

Their economy centers on the export of the building materials they
acquire through forestry and their quarries. Their town was built
through the good use of their natural resources, and the streets are
lined with buildings made from wood, not stone. The townscape sets
your heart at ease.

[A natural fortress, surrounded by crags and forests]

[→ If you make your way through to the east, you can travel to the
Great Plains, which are under Pao's jurisdiction. However, there is a
shortcut traveling to Shade.]

Thanks to the dense screen of the forest, it would be difficult for a
large army to attack, but it's easy for them to defend themselves. The
abundant forests also bring them wealth in the form of timber. You
could say that, from the standpoint of the people who are descended
from werewolves, the forest is absolutely a treasure without peer.

Population: 453
Area: 1189km² (459.1 mi²)
Climate/Industry: Siberian/agriculture, manufacturing

====
p.54
====

[The one and only support for the free people who roam the vast earth]

A nomadic nation that lives by moving about freely through the vast
earth in camps, and whose territory encompasses the Great Plains of
Pao. The Pao clan are raised from childhood to be powerful warriors.
This is because they roam the Great Plains--which could be called
their entire life--and engage in endless battles with various nations.
Hunting is their primary industry, but they also engage in other
activities, such as raising grazing livestock.

[Koron, Queen of Pao]

[← She lives in her own tent and leads an independent life. You could
certainly call her the symbol of Pao.]

[While they peacefully pasture their livestock, they are a fighting
force with a powerful army]

At camp, they raise their sheep-like animals called "paopab" and lead
a tranquil life. [Note: In Japanese, paopab (パオパブ) sounds a lot like
baobab (バオバブ). Could be a Little Prince reference?] When war breaks
out, this clan, which is warlike by nature, is able to hold out as
well as anyone thanks to their powerful army.

====
p.55
====

[A country whose capital moves along with its people]

[→ At first glance, a vast, unsettled area. To the west, the towns of
Bustoke and Shade . . .]

So that they may follow the lead of the Great Plains--whom they regard
as their matriarch--and move about as they please, their capital has
no fixed location. The national colors are green, white, and blue,
which represent the prairie, the sun, and the wind, respectively. You
can really sense that they love the prairie from the bottoms of their
hearts.

Population: 562
Area: 26,985km² (10,419mi²)
Climate/Industry: continental/agriculture

People in Bustoke are descended from werewolves... huh.

I thought the specificity of Bustoke was that it is in the mountains, not the forest...
And Pao has a great army? Where is it then?

Hmmm. Interesting. Bustoke's territory is about the same as New York City. All of the kingdoms seem to be extremely small, area and population wise. I guess even after 1000 years it's still hard to survive in a world ravaged by continual wars, monsters, and demons. : / Certainly is more apocalyptic than I had thought.

Quite a wealth of information here. Will help alot for fan-fictions and stories, etc.

On Pao having a great army. I would have never imagined it. But now tha I read it, it does sound interesting cause you never see them heh. Im guessing becuase of limitations of the technology back, or perhaps becuase of deadlines, alot of stuff was probably cut from the game. I mean, here they go to great lengths to describe the world for us and yet alot of stuff never made it ingame. Probably in part due to Sega's reluctance to improve funding for Sonic Software Planning.

And I don't quite get the thing about the song "traveller from a long time ago". What, Max is from the past?

On a side note, something interesting to think about just for fun. In that one pic that never made it ingame, with Lowe dragging Max out of shore, imagine if by some time/space loop continuum, Max has floated all the way from the castle of the ancients after defeating Dark Dragon. Yes, Shining Force starts exactly after it ends. Anyone seen Lost? Yeah, playing around with time. Shining Force was quite ahead of its time!

More likely due to either:

1.Cartridge limitations. In the GamesTM interview, Hiroyuki Takahashi recalled that Camelot's heavy ambitions for SF1 made it very difficult to fit the game into the available ROM space. It's not unlikely that they had to cut one or two things to pull it off.

2.An appearance by the Pao army simply didn't add anything worthwhile. One of the most important parts of revising a story is to remove anything that isn't part of the story. I imagine that a similar principle applies to video game development.

Not I. I've read Nth Man(which came out a few years before Shining Force I), though. Larry Hama called it "The Rinse Cycle": the villain screws with time too much, so the hero has to go back to where he was dropped off at the orphanage.

Interesting interpretation of the game's end. What happened to Adam, though?

Adam sunk to the bottom of the sea and spent the time up until Chapter 7 walking back to Metapha.
