Hi everyone,

The UK games magazine, GAMES tm have done a retro feature in this month's issue on pages 156 & 157. It's issue 61 and has a picture of master chief on the front with a big Halo 3 feature.

It's also got a review of Shining Force on the Wii VC as well.

It's not a bad feature, but as always with magazines these day it's not a perfect feature and includes some mistakes and errors. drunk.gif damnit.gif devil.gif snarl.gif

I would post a scan of the feature but I don't have access to a scanner, I would go into greater detail about the feature but I'm at work now. Any way it's nice to see a SF3 feature and if you fancy a read you know what magazine to buy.

After my trip to Tesco tonight I'll scan and post links to the pages.

Just a quick point, but the new issue of games has only just come out, so some shops are still selling the old issue, which is issue.

The annoying thing about issue 61, is that the issue has a halo 3 wraper around it that is stuck to a couple of pages, so if you don't remove it and the glue that's stuck to it carefully it will rip the issue. sad.gif

I went on the GAMEStm website and saw the art for the new magazine that just came out, so I should pick up the right one smile.gif

Here we go!

I've done it as one full picture - If people would prefer it to be in two parts, then please let me know.

Not a bad write up, and even a plug for SFC.

Certainly kicks the arses of many SHF3 reviews I've seen over the years.

Good find, S3M... have to keep an eye open for that if it's still on sale anywhere locally.

Yeah Swalchy pointed that out to me in a PM and I noticed it the first time I read the feature. Also the parts, about the Republic & Destionia aren't greatly written, it fails to really explain the social story.

Also there is no mention to the English script change to the ending, as we all know the cliffhanger was covered up in the UK version. The writer seems to suggest it wasn't changed.

Overall I find the piece to be very child like in the way it's written. While I understand it's trying to introduce people to the title who have never played it before it. There's some hot air in the feature which could have been taken out and other parts could have been written to explain the story better. Also the lack of any mention to Shining the Holy Ark suggests the writer doesn't fully understand the series. Maybe it's just personal opinion but I would have certainly have worded a few bit differently if I have written a feature on Shining Force III.

Cheer Cull, but I knew there was something coming up in this month's issue of games when the guy who edits the retro section posted on their forum.

He also did this feature at NTSC, which is also where I can be found these days in the retro forum. As I don't post that much here at SFC these days.
http://www.ntsc-uk.com/feature.php?feature...a=RShiningForce

Also a big Shining Series feature is coming to retro gamer magazine at some point in the near future. I'll let you know when it does.

And has anyone posted a link to this on Jumesyn? Or maybe I should just sign up to Jumesyn.

I enjoy GAMES magazine alot, doesn't take itself to seriously like EDGE. The piece was quite good if alittle inaccurate. Nice to see a magazine that doesn't think RPG's begin & end with Final Fantasy. They seem fairly pro-SEGA as well, with quite afew articles on the Sega Ages 2500 games. Wonder if they'll ever revamp Shining games like they have with the Phantasy Star games?

I like the analysis of the author about the towns' sections and what you learn by talking to the people. I wonder if he's right though, when he says that those themes (war, technology revolution...) don't tend to appear in console games.

What do you think about it? As far as I remember, I enjoyed the conversations in Phatasy Star IV for instance (want to play that game again...!)

But pointing that out, the author made me realize it's one of the things I really like in the serie. And it makes me think I've got to kill Kane of Runefaust very soon wink.gif

I wrote the feature in question and I'm glad to see it's gone down well with a few of you here. Sorry about the occasional error... they inevitably creep into most magazine features, usually due to time constraints. Magazine writers typically have to write about 25-30 pages every 4 weeks whilst also arranging interviews, attending trips and, of course, playing games. I wish we had more time to get things like this perfect but it's the nature of the beast I'm afraid.

As for omitting ShTHA, well with only 700 words to summarise an entire trilogy it's impossible to get everything in and, as noted, the spread was intended as a general newcomer's introduction to Shining Force III itself.

Anyway, enough of my excuses. I've got loads more child-like writing to do before beddie-byes.

Appreciate the feature Ashley - even the few errors aren't that big of a deal, and that's certainly the best feature I've seen for Shining Force 3 ever Since Sega Saturn Magazine (although even then, the writer botched up a few things - if only Richard Leadbetter had done the feature...).

I'm looking forward to seeing more features on Shining Force 3 poping up - especially with the current progress of the Translation Project.

Well I'm supposed to be writing a huge Shining Force history for Retro Gamer at some point and I'll let you all know if and when that eventually happens. The last time I put together a retrospective of that size (for NTSC-UK in 2004) I consulted this forum to make sure it was all factually correct and I'll definitely be doing that again this time. I hate errors as much as everyone else.

Oh and you never know what I'll be able to squeeze into gamesTM in the future. I try to mention the Shining series as often as possible. happy.gif

Glad to hear it Ashley smile.gif

I'm sure everyone else here who loves Shf3 is glad for at least some media coverage that Shf3 deserves that even Sega itself didn't do very well with.

hopefully it'll give sega a kick up the backside and try to get back in bed with camelot, and persuade them the take up the Shining series again!

Best way to start that would be for sega to ask their help in creating a port of SF3 and maybe STHA for wii (as camelot are in bed with nintendo now)

Psh, you treat sega like it is human, companies are machines with one thing in mind, $$$

If it costs too much to patch things up with camelot so that they can profit off it, it will never happen

Yes, Sega Saturn Magazine totally ruled. I was lucky enough to be given six copies by my friendly games dealer Stumpy. Well, not local, he was actually in (somewhere I can't remember) and later I got a box of like thirty from a car boot sale and they've been read so much they are all dog-eared and some have the covers torn off. And yes, Rich was the best writer. He was super-intelligent and hot to boot. Well, not hot... nevermind. Please note I am a guy so I can't really say these kinds of things.

I said I'd let you know, so here goes. Issue 58 of Retro Gamer is on sale this Thursday and features an 8-page history of the Shining series.

Here's what you need to look for:

I saw the issue mentioned on NTSC-UK so guess, I'll be in WHSmith tomorrow.

Out of interest Ash, how much beer or games would we need to bribe Daren with to get a Shining series front cover. thumbsup.gif

You're lucky it even got a cover line. That sort of thing is decided by the directors, who I suspect are not fans of the series.
